The International Expat Dream

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

These days, the American Dream is often termed the American Nightmare. Hellish hours are the consistent norm as of 2012, with an estimated 60% of the population of the United States working at minimum of 40 hours per week, 50 weeks per year just to cover their basic cost of living. For the most part, people are living paycheck to paycheck, barely skimming by and having just enough to pay their basics. In some cases, people are choosing to juggle their bills, paying something late this month and then switching something else the following month so they can just manage to squeeze by. For these 60% who are living on borrowed money, there is no existence outside of work. Instead, there is only the endless treadmill grind if 40 hour work weeks and mandatory overtime until you are finally old enough to be “allowed” to call it quits at the age of 65.

For many, there is nothing to look forward to other than a long, dark tunnel of never-ending tedium, working the same eight to ten hour shifts day in, day out, with maybe Sundays off, over a period of 40+ years until they are finally 65 years old and “allowed” to retire. These are the average, everyday living conditions of people in the United States.

This is the American Dream as it exists today. And it is because of this nightmare reality that more and more web-savvy individuals are looking towards the borders beyond the United States for their next Big Break. For these intelligent few, the horizons beyond are beckoning with the lure of a location independent lifestyle as an international expat, roaming the planet while working on the Internet and taking advantage of the lowered cost of living in countries around the world. This allows them to bypass the debt and credit necessities of living back home and instead transport themselves into the world of debt-free living where their money is going three to four timers farther than it ever would in their home country.

Imagine having $1,000 a month actually be worth the same as $3,000 per month, or even $4,000 per month. That is the reason so many expats are exploring the digital nomad lifestyle, because when you take your business to a country like Bulgaria or Thailand, Mexico or Colombia, your dollars are worth three to four times what they are back in the United States. As long as you have an Internet connection and some form of digital income (such as PayPal or direct bank deposits) you can live as an expat, which means pensioners or any type of freelancer or individual working on the Internet can transition over, out of the brick-and-mortar and into the full-time traveler life.

Best of all, the digital nomad lifestyle is incredibly easy to transition into. Most governments only require that you provide proof of around $1,000 per month of income, either from a pension or some other form of monthly deposit into your bank account, such as a salary or freelance income. And, since most countries only have a couple of weeks of waiting for your application to go through, you can be pursuing the location independent dream within just a few short weeks. While your neighbors and friends back home might still be stuck on the hamster wheel grinding out 40 hour work weeks for a salary that barely breaks even, you can be location independent enjoying the freedom of the digital nomad lifestyle where a mere $1,000 a month gives you an upper middle class existence on par with what $4,000 a month back home would give you.

Vacation Travel By Train

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

Over the last ten years there has been a return to train travel, particularly in the United States. This might have something to do with nostalgia and romance, but most analysts put it down to a result of the in-flight bombing of Twin Towers on 9/11/2001.

The government’s and the airlines’ response to those acts of terrorism have resulted in massive hikes in the degree of security at airports and justly so, but travellers are also put off by the lengthy queues and intrusive searches at airports. This difficulty is even worse at busy airports and during vacation periods such as when schools are off.

Car travel is also an alternative, but then you have to carry out your own driving and that brings its own issues, especially if you are with children and particularly if you are a single parent. Besides that, travelling by train is a vacation in its own right. Your trip begins the moment you put your bags in the rack and find your seat.

Once you have found your seat, given the kids a colouring book and a can of soda, you can sit back, relax and just snooze or look out of the window at the scenery whizzing past. Most of your problems are over until you get to where you are going. Your kids cannot get lost or wander off and they are very safe from predators.

Moreover, trains seats are normally much more spacious than comparable airline seats. Economy seats in a train are much more comfortable than economy seats in an airplane. You can also get up and walk about which makes long journeys much more comfortable.

The backdrop is also better from a train than a plane. After all, clouds are clouds are clouds, but you can see all kinds of objects out of the window of a train. There are also sleeping and dining carriages to break up the journey, but there is normally also attendant service in your seat, if that is what you would like. Merely push the button and someone will appear to take your order.

Have you heard of the Orient Express, the Flying Scotsman or the Trans-Siberian Express? What romantic visions they summon up. Contemporary trains may not have the nostalgia or the steam locomotives of the Thirties, but they are still fantastic to travel on.

You can book your seats on a train trip much the same as you would on a plane, which means that if you get up to go to the bathroom or dining carriage, your seat will still be empty when you return. This is a colossal plus factor, because it is annoying if someone takes your seat.

The next time that you decide to go away, re-evaluate going by train. You can leave your car at the station or you can even take it with you on the train, if you like. You will not regret having given the rail network a chance, because the likelihood are that you have forgotten how handy and inexpensive they are.

A Cross Country Experience

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

The road trip is an adventure that was distinctly born on the hot and dusty roads of the American open highways. While the United States is obviously not the only place one can undertake road trips, it is still largely a uniquely American experience.

Unlike our counterparts across the pond, we have land, vast amounts of it. We have states bigger than many European countries. In Europe, cities and countries are not so far apart and can be reached fairly easily. In America, it can take a whole a day off hard driving to reach a destination, thus creating a car traveling culture.

Unlike America, Europe has also invested heavily in mass transportation. With so little land to build on, and so many locations near each other, Europe realized early on that they were well situated for a good mass transit system. America is so spread out, the cost of building railways and subways everywhere would have been staggering. Although, in hindsight, America should have done much more in the past to promote mass transit in heavily congested areas.

Another factor is that the automobile is a uniquely American invention. Sure people in other places have them, but the automobile was created here and has come to represent the freedom and liberty to go anywhere at any given time. The idea that we can just take off and go explore the world without being tied to home all the time is one that is very America. We like our freedom and bought into the idea of the automobile almost as soon as it was invented.

Nearly everyone has gone on road trips. The time spent with friends and families in the car have produced many great times and memories for everyone. The excitement of reaching a location, the odd sites and tourist traps encountered along the way, the singing, the car games being played and (now) movies watched while traveling. For the value of your trade in see used car appraisals for the best trade in value.

Maybe the best part is the late night driving. Most of the car passed out sleeping, the radio turned on to your favorite tunes, the dark roads, the moon and skies and peaceful night skies. Time ceases to exist during these nights.

Of course there are mandatory things to take with you. A camera for all the sights, your favorite music to travel to is also a necessity. Pillows and a blanket for the travelers to doze off on, and best of all, road trip food.

Truck stops and fast food offer the travelers delight. Heavily caffeinated drinks like coffee, energy drinks or sodas are consumed in high numbers. Junk food like, cookies, nuts, trail mix and pastries are mandatory. For dinner, hit the fast food joints for burgers, hot dogs, tacos or whatever is your pleasure. Don’t forget to stop get a milkshake or ice cream cone along the way. Dairy Queen is perennial favorite in the South and McDonalds is always available, but there are plenty of other places to satisfy your craving. Of course, there is always the one person who has to stop to go to the bathroom all the time.

So it is we salute you great Road Trip, icon of the streets with all the fond memories you bring. Now excuse me while I stop to go the restroom.

If you need to purchase a car we can help with your used car financing today.

Places To Go Skiing In Europe

Monday, September 5th, 2011

Europe is the birthplace of skiing. The first drawings of a skier were found in a cave in Nordland, Norway. The drawing has been dated at 5000 BC. Norway was almost certainly the home of skiing or what is called Nordic Skiing anyway.

Alpine or downhill skiing probably comes from central Europe in the neighbourhood of Switzerland. There are such a lot of skiing resorts in Europe that there is a fantastic number of slopes for each level of experience.

You can ski in almost every country in Europe. The least well-known skiing resorts are almost certainly in Scotland, but they do have them and the most well-known resorts are in the French and Swiss Alps, which are actually the same place, but they extend over two different countries.

The French and The Swiss alps are the most commercialized for luxury and are also the most expensive. Not far east from there is Austria which, although less famous is also an attraction for skiers from Eastern Europe.

If you want skiing at a more affordable rate go to Italy up on the Swiss border. There you will see practically the same skiing conditions as in the French and Swiss Alps but with Italian food and language, which means less English is spoken though, if you see that as a downside.

Roughly the same price is Andorra which is Catalan (Spanish to you and me, but not to them). Andorra sits in the Pyrenees Mountains with borders on France and Spain. The Spanish influence is the greater of the two. Skiing in Andorra is famous for its teaching. It is a fantastic place to learn skiing or to take the family.

If you would like to visit a rising star in the skiing firmament, go to Croatia. Skiing in Croatia is also among the most reasonably priced in Europe. The facilities are excellent, but local wages are low which keeps the costs down. The food is good and so is the wine, though not perhaps a match for French, Italian or Spanish cuisine.

Bulgaria is another rising location on the skier’s map. Skiing is not well commercialized in Bulgaria but the locals have been skiing for centuries, it is merely that they are only just beginning to learn how to commercialize it. The locals are friendly, but do not expect much English to be spoken.

We must not forget the home of skiing, Norway and the rest of Scandinavia. Expect top class amenities in Scandinavia with top class prices to match. The locals are very friendly, but might not speak English. The food is more likely to be local too. You are more likely to get decent skiing conditions all year round in Scandinavia as well.

There are so numerous skiing resorts in so numerous European countries, that if you wanted to, you could organize a skiing tour of Europe. If you wanted to ski in Scandinavia and Andorra, you would have to fly, but you could do the Swiss, French and Italian Alps. Or Austria and Bulgaria or Bulgaria and Croatia.

Safety In Foreign Taxis

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

The vast majority of taxi owners are not dangerous and the vast majority of taxi journeys pass without incident. However, there have been worries at home and abroad, so it is worth taking fundamental safety steps. The added problem when using a taxi abroad, naturally, is the language and cultural barrier.

The purpose of this piece is to make you aware of your safety whilst taking a taxi abroad, but these safety pointers should be applied equally in your own country. Safety, particularly personal safety, ought to become one of your paramount worries.

The first bit of advice is to take a taxi from a taxi rank. Do not take a taxi from a person who is touting his taxi service outside the airport or the train station. Most countries have a system of organized taxi ranks, but there are always rogue taxi drivers attempting to by-pass the certified system.

If there is no taxi rank enquire of one of the police, that can be seen standing in each public transport building. If that does not do any good, go into a hotel, restaurant or bar and request the proprietor to phone you a taxi. Before you get into the taxi, commit the registration number or number plate of the taxi to memory and write it down once you are inside the cab.

If you are arriving in the location from a long distance away, know the location of the building you want to visit. This is easily done by going to Google Earth, typing the location in and printing off the map. Then you know if you are being taken for a ride literally. Do not permit yourself to get taken anywhere you do not want to go. Sit in the back so that you have the upper hand if you require it.

Hold you precious belongings near you, then if you have to make a run for it, you will have your essentials and the details of the taxi that you wrote down earlier.

Does the car look like a taxi or does it look like someone’s personal car? You have more chance of being ripped off by a private hire car than a firm with a boss and a license to lose. Most genuine taxis will have the company’s phone number written on them, so ask for a card or write it down.

If you are travelling alone, try to share the taxi with another foreigner. Most foreigners are looking for a hotel to stay when they arrive, so this is not as hard as it may sound. Do not permit another local to share with you, because you do not know who they are - they could be a team.

Finally, do not be into a car that is in very bad condition. If the driver is on the level, the car will be clean and the windows and the door handles will work. Do not step into a car without internal door handles..

Controlling Mosquitoes

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Mosquito is a familiar insect which belongs to the family Culicidae. The word mosquito is of Spanish and Portuguese origin which translates as ?little fly?. A mosquito passes through four phases in its life cycle i.e. egg, larva, pupa and adult. The fully developed mosquito is also called an imago. Eggs are laid by adult females in still water like puddles, lakes, ponds, or containers etc.

The life of an adult mosquito is four-eight weeks long. The mouthparts of mosquitoes are adapted to pierce the skin of animals and plants. Males feed on nectar and the juices of plants while the females have to feed on blood to get nutrients in order to lay eggs. Over 3,500 species of mosquitoes are to be found in the world.

The females of some species feed on humans and are the cause of many contagious illnesses. Egg development and blood digestion are two vital events in the life of female mosquitoes. They serve as a vector to transfer viruses and parasites from one person to another.

Mosquito control is necessary for getting rid of harmful mosquitoes and the illnesses spread by them. It is estimated that mosquitoes spread illnesses to over 700 million individuals in Asia, Africa, Mexico, Central America and South America. Many deaths are the result of contagious illnesses caused by the bites of mosquitoes.

In the time when mosquito control was less widespread, thousands of deaths were caused each year. Malaria and yellow fever were known to be caused by mosquito bites. WestNile fever is also borne by mosquitoes. Dengue disease and Encephalitis are other infectious diseases caused by mosquitoes.

Natural enemies of mosquitoes include the dragonfly which assists control the number of mosquitoes by eating them. The reaction to the bites of mosquitoes can be instantaneous or postponed. The irritation on the bites is due to an immunity response.

A number of anti-itch treatments are available on the market. Some medications are taken orally whilst others are for external use only. Itching can be reduced by applying an adhesive tape to the region of the bite or by sucking on the area through a straw.

A very effectual anti-inflammatory agent is Tea tree oil, which reduces itching. Insecticides can also be used to kill the larvae of the mosquito. Source reduction is a very efficient way to control mosquitoes by removing stagnant water. Biocontrol is a different remedy by which natural enemies of mosquitoes are used to control their numbers.

Chemical pesticides will kill adult mosquitoes because they are the most harmful from the point of view of spreading disease. DDT was used for the reduction of mosquitoes on a large scale but now it?s use is prohibited in some countries. Different kinds of repellents are used to deter mosquitoes from biting. DEET is used as an effective repellent.

Picaridin and IR3535 are also very commonly used CDC-recommended repellents. Oil of Eucalyptus is a natural repellent and it is highly recommended. It is very important to take safety measures to protect yourself from the contagious diseases carried by mosquitoes.

Tell Me About Bed Bugs

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Most individuals under seventy years of age in the West will not have seen bed bugs. This is mainly due to enhanced living conditions, DDT and better public education. The DDT was used in the thirties and forties and eradicated the problem in the more wealthy countries.

Bed bugs are a part of the arachnid or spider family, although bed bugs are parasites that suck blood, not all bodily fluids. They will dine on most warm-blooded animals and there is some proof that humans are not their first choice of prey.

The most common variety of bed bugs are known as Cimex lectularius by their Latin name. They are quite small but very fast moving bugs and they are members of the spider family, although many of them do not resemble spiders at all. Instead, most of them look like little beetles, until they have gorged themselves, after which they can hardly move and are at their most helpless.

Bed bugs feed in a similar way to mosquitoes. They insert a tube into the skin of its prey and suck blood out. It is not a great deal to you, about a quarter of a millilitre, but is a lot to them. It allows them to live and reproduce.

Bed bugs, unlike their relatives the ticks, are not known to convey any diseases. In fact, they are one of the few insects that do not pass on a disease.

A bedbug bite is similar to an ant bite in appearance, but it will itch similar a mosquito bite. You will most likely experience a slight swelling with a red dot in the centre and an itch. Not much more.

You can check for bed bugs quite easily by soaking a bar of soap in a little water for half an hour while you lie on your bed reading a book. Then get up and fetch the soap, wet-side down and throw back the bed clothes. Pat up the bed bugs, if there are any with the soft soap. This is a speedy method of getting rid of a small number of bed bugs, but cannot be seen as a solution.

With regards to the annihilation of an infestation of bed bugs, it depends where you live. If you are in a hotel, the bar of soap will be proof enough of a problem and it is the hotel manager’s duty to provide a solution. If they do nothing, report the hotel to the neighbourhood tourist bureau.

If you live in rented accommodation, it is your landlord’s responsibility to solve the predicament. If he or she is disinclined, then go to the council hall and seek advice.

If the issue is in your own house, then take the skirting boards and architraves off. Spray or paint very powerful insecticide onto the wall and refit the woodwork. If you are still worried, seal the woodwork off on all sides with mastic or silicone.

These measures will ensure that your house will be free of bed bugs.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on quite a few subjects, but is currently concerned with natural tick repellent. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at tick Repellent For Dogs.

How To Get The Most Out Of Cheap Car Rentals

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Automobile rentals are an essential part of many business and pleasure travellers? lives. If you are staying at a location away from home for more than a day and you need to get around, then hiring a car is a less expensive option than using taxis, especially if you are quite confident in traffic. However, there is a trade-off with some firms.

A lot of car rental companies are rather dear, but they do offer convenience. Then there are budget or cheap car rentals. This article is about how to get the most out of these cheap car rental automobile firms.

There are automobile rental companies that permit you to set the price that you want to pay for renting a car and then they will go out and find the best contract that they can around that price range. These are not strictly automobile rental firms, they are go-betweens., but they can present great deals.

You could try bundling your automobile rental into the price of your travel or hotel bill. Many airlines and hotel chains have tie-ins with automobile rental firms and they can therefore present great savings.

If you like to do everything yourself, try the Internet. You probably already know that some of the best deals in every market are to be had on the Internet. You can often get special offers on the Internet that are only available to Internet shoppers. These can be discounts, upgrades, increased mileage or delivery.

One way of getting something is to ask for it. As a popular axiom goes: ?If you don?t ask, you don?t get?. Very often you will get a discount just by asking for it. Remarkable, but true. If you are paying by credit card, it is worth asking whether your credit card entitles you to a discount as well. Never forget that many large firms have tie-ups.

It is well-worth inspecting the condition of the vehicle very carefully before driving away, otherwise you may end up paying for damage that you did not bring about. If there is damage, point it out to the renter and if you think it is indispensable, take photos of the impairment with the rental assistant pointing to it.

Be aware of what your own insurance policy covers. Often, your own car insurance will cover you driving a rental automobile, so why pay again? Read your own car insurance policy carefully before you travel and take a copy of its terms and conditions with you.

Turn up very early in the morning to pick up your car. Most people return rental cars at the last moment, so if you turn up early, they may not have a cheap car for you and will have to upgrade you.

Make sure that the car is fitted with a good, working automobile alarm. This will ensure that you are not penalized if the rental automobile is stolen, when it was not your fault. By following all or at least some of these tips, you should save some money on cheap car rentals.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece writes on various topics, but is currently concerned with Prestige car alarms. If you would like to know more, please go to our website at Escort 8500.
