Hot Tub Safety Suggestions

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

Water can be dangerous particularly for families with small children, so each family with a hot tub should have some type of safety policy. This article will give some fundamental hot tub safety pointers that can be adopted by families for the protection of its children and other members.

The first safety pointer for hot tubs is never to leave children alone with a hot tub full of water. It is not a matter of whether the child can swim or not. Children play, fight and mess around. They could fall over, bang their head, be knocked unconscious and drown. There are several scenarios where this could happen and it is simply better to not give bad luck an opportunity. Do not allow children in a tub on their own or even anywhere close by it if it is full.

It is fairly usual to have an alcoholic drink when in the hot tub in the evening, but be careful not to get drunk. It is very perilous to be out of control or even fall unconscious while you are in or in water and this goes doubly for a hot tub because they are so relaxing. The warm water, the soothing motion of the water and excess alcohol or other drugs could lead to you falling asleep and drowning.

However, it is not only while you are in the tub that being drunk is risky, being a bit wobbly is arguably even more perilous when you are climbing in or out of the tub because you could fall, bump your head and drown whilst unconscious. Never let anyone use your hot tub if they are intoxicated or stoned unless there are sober or straight individuals there too. This rule should be applied to those on medication too.

Another danger, be it ever so slight is that of long hair being sucked into the filtration and cleaning system. If a young child with long hair had its hair sucked into the drain, it could have difficulty getting back above the water line, particularly if it panicked. Another reason never to leave children unsupervised in a pool or spa.

It is a good idea to know how to turn the spa’s motor or pump off quickly, so that if there is problem with hair entanglement, you can release the child by turning the pump off quickly which should release the child.

The electricity supply to the tub will be pretty well protected, especially if it was installed by a professional, but is worth checking every now and again that the leads are all still shielded from water, because as we all know, water and electricity do not combine well.

Also keep this in mind if you take any mains powered apparatus like a radio, TV or computer to the spa with you as well. Keep all electrical devices well away from the spa and far enough away that they will not be splashed. They can be controlled by a remote handset without any risk.

When Humans Are Poisonous To Mosquitoes

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

There is a method of making humans poisonous to mosquitoes. In fact, scientists and doctors have suspected that it was possible to make us poisonous to mosquitoes for 25 years, but there has not been enough proof to prove it. Now scientists are more certain of the concept.

The drug that is so poisonous to mosquitoes is to be found in a relatively cheap tablet that has been used for deworming for 25 years. These tablets are passed out to populations who are at risk of river blindness (Onchocerciasis) which is caused by infection by Onchocerca volvulus - a parasitic roundworm found in fast-flowing rivers mainly in Central and West Africa.

The drug, known as ivermectin or Mectizan, that kills the worms also kills mosquitoes, but it has a quite short effectual time span, which is one of the factors why its usefulness for controlling mosquitoes has long been suspected but never proven.

There is a difficulty though - there just has to be one, does there not? The use of ivermectin to control mosquito populations can only be truly effective if everyone in the region starts taking the pills at the same time and keeps taking them. The tablets are effective for about a month, so everybody in a whole village would have to take a tablet on, say, the first of every month.

This does not seem like much of a difficulty, but scientists, doctors and aid workers say that it is in fact a nightmare attempting to get a thousand or even thousands of individuals to follow an annual campaign against such a significant threat as river blindness.

The drug itself has been in use against river blindness for 25 years already so it is known to be safe, although it can cause death in very rare incidents. Therefore, safety is not an a problem and villagers are not frightened of taking it.

The latest studies were carried out by scientists from Senegal and Colorado State University and their results were printed in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. The piece reports that the scientists vacuumed the mosquitoes off the walls of huts in three villages where individuals had consumed ivermectin and three where they had not.

There were 80% fewer malarial mosquitoes in the villages where the inhabitants had taken ivermectin. This is because the drug was killing the mosquitoes off at a much earlier age than is typical and it is usually only older mosquitoes that carry malaria because they have to get infected by a human host first.

Although the drug is quite cheap, at the moment it is handed out once a year during the worst season for the parasitic roundworm that causes river blindness. If it were to be used successfully to control mosquitoes, it would have to be distributed a dozen times more often, which would present a colossal drain on all resources financial, distributional and human.

Another objection to this method of treatment for mosquitoes is that to do it in the correct manner, everyone would have to get screened for infection by loa loa worms, because the drug also kills them, but as they die they can clog tiny blood vessels which can lead to coma and death. This would mean drawing blood from millions and millions of people and testing for loa loa.

Hot Tubs And Hydrotherapy

Monday, September 5th, 2011

Do you suffer from aching joints, a bad back, a stiff neck or issues with your shoulders? If so, your doctor might have arranged a course of hydrotherapy. A physician or physiotherapist may also prescribe hydrotherapy for arthritis and a number of other ailments including knee problems with cartilage and tendons.

Relaxing in warm water is an extremely practical treatment for many conditions and is generally called hydrotherapy. It usually also involves adding salts, oils or / and herbs to the water. A typical session for the point of hydrotherapy is 15-30 minutes. You can perform this form of water therapy at home with one of the many domestic hot tubs on the market.

Even if you are fortunate enough not to suffer from chronic joint pain, you can benefit from relaxing in a tub of swirling, bubbling, hot water as is to be found in a hot tub, hot spa or Jacuzzi, which are all the same thing by different names. Luxuriating in a hot tub will ease away daily aches and pains, relax the mind and body and even go some way to unblocking the nasal passages.

The relief on your joints is immediate, because if you are submerged in water up to your neck, the effect of gravity is neutralized by the buoyancy of the water by between 20%-30%. This is a lot - a ten stone person suddenly feels like a 7-8 stone person.

Having this amount of weight ‘removed’ makes it easier for the disabled or the arthritic to exercise. In fact, hydrotherapy may be the only form of exercise that some individuals have because it is simply too painful to move needlessly on land. The bed-ridden also derive great benefit from sitting in a hot tub and exercising in it a little.

Hydrotherapy is also used for treating burns patients. Water is soothing and herbs and oils may be added to help treat the condition. Using warm water as a benefit to health is not a new concept by any stretch of the imagination. Individuals have been using spas for thousands of years. The Pharaohs, Ancient Greeks and Romans used them and they were popular in India long before the birth of Christ.

If you have the money and the space, getting a hot tub with therapeutic hot water jets ought to be on your short list. One thing is for sure, you wil never regret buying a hot tub for the practice of hydrotherapy at home.

You do not need a specialist hydrotherapy unit, because all hot tubs can carry out that task, although some firms do offer their clients special hydrotherapy jets. It is handy to have directional jets pointing at each seat though for the personal touch.

Pool Safety Fences: A Buying Guide

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

If you have had a swimming pool for some time or if you are about to get one - either an above-ground or an in-ground swimming pool - you must check to see whether your district requires you to take any safety precautions. For instance, some states in America require the erection of a swimming pool safety fence by law, others are about to introduce such a law and others are thinking about calling for a pool alarm as well.

However, it is not all one-sided. There are also advantages to the owner of the pool of installing a pool safety fence. The main benefit of such a fence is safety. If you have young children or grand-children, you do not always have the time to supervise them playing in the pool, so a fence is a way of allowing the kids to play in the garden whilst excluding them from the dangerous pool.

Kids can be scallywags, all adults know that even if some parents think that their own kids are not, you can bet your bottom dollar that someone else thinks they are. Our children know that they have to behave in front of us, but what occurs whilst they know that we are not watching? You know, you were a kid yourself once. I climbed the fence into the municipal outdoor pool more than once while I was a teenager and mostly after a few beers.

The fact is that if you have an unprotected pool, there is a decent chance that the local kids will use it when you are away and these days that means negligence on behalf of the pool owner. Whether that is right or wrong, it is like that and if someone should drown in your pool, you would be in big trouble, unless you could prove that your took reasonable measures to prevent unauthorized access to your pool.

A security pool fence is just about the cheapest way of doing this, although fences can be easily scaled as I full-well know. However, having a fence shows that you have thought about the issue and that you have tried to deter intruders.

There are quite a number of acceptable styles of pool fencing but it may vary from district to district, so it is first worth checking whether there are any local minimum standards in force in your region. Other than that, there are choices of wire, timber and steel. Wire can include mesh fences as well.

Timber almost certainly looks the best and gives the most options. If you want total privacy, you can have a full fence or if you would like to be able to see out, you could go for hit-and-miss vertical boarding. I do not like mesh, personally. I have painted tens of miles of fencing in my time and there always seems to be litter caught in the mesh. Iron railings are nice as well, but pretty costly.

Whichever sort of fence you go for, grow a continuous wall of the prickliest, thorniest bushes you can find about the base of it. Pyracanthas are good and the berries attract birds - wild birds, that is. Let them grow to three or four feet high and they will deter drunks and afford the ladies some privacy while lying around the pool.

Hot Tub Developments Over The Years

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Hut tubs have been commercially available for about 50 years, so you can guess that the technology has come a long way. In the early days, hot tubs were normally merely a small round wooden tub that was bursting at the seams with over two people in it. They were invariably round in shape and there was very little choice.

The first hot tubs to appear in the States were seen in the 1940’s, but they were usually little more that than wooden barrels filled with hot water intended to give a long deep soak. In the 1950’s, the concept grew and families started to create or buy hot tubs in order to relax and to alleviate the indications of arthritis. By the mid 1960’s, people were adding home-manufactured heaters and pumps and very basic versions of the contemporary wooden hot tub were being born.

One early innovator was Roy Jacuzzi who developed and marketed the first hot tub that incorporated swirling water and jets. This whirlpool bath literally began the whole industry in 1968. In the early 1970’s, manufacturers started to incorporate more powerful jets into their hot tubs and some manufacturers began making more comfortable designs out of fibreglass and acrylic. The business was taking off big time.

Jacuzzi started to produce larger models so that friends or a family could all enjoy the experience together. Most of the modernizations since the late 1970’s have been technical, but these technical improvements have been fairly significant.

The filters are more readily accessible nowadays which means that they are more likely to be cleaned as regularly as they ought to be in order to prevent the build up of bacteria from rotting vegetation and hair. This will pollute the water and could create a health hazard. Not only that, but clogged filters means that the pump has to work more to circulate the water which means more wear and tear and eventually, more money.

There is a greater choice of materials and colours these days. Before, the choice was: what sort of timber do you want? Now you can still have that option, plus the choice of any colour acrylic you would like too. Or you can have an acrylic tub inside a wooden (or synthetic wood) exterior or skirt.

The advantages of the synthetic materials are that they last longer, are easier to clean and can be impregnated with a substance that kills or wards off bacteria and mould.

The seating arrangement can be customized in modern spas to suit individual bathers. Each chair might have one or more directable jets and the seat itself might be manufactured to a precise height for a certain person or for a specific injury or condition.

The water heating provisions are a lot more flexible too. These days, the water can be heated by gas, electricity, your homes central heating system or by solar power, which is a colossal improvement if you live in a country that enjoys a great deal of sun.

To top it all off, you can add aromatherapy oils and spa salt crystals to the water by putting them in a draw like in a dish washer and have them circulated in the water evenly.

Mosquito Repellent Plants

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Those small, maddening creatures, mosquitoes, have always made us run for our lives because they are thought to be carriers of diseases from person to person, animal to animal and from human to animals. How true it is that in Africa alone mosquitoes that kill one child under the age of five every 30 seconds, are the foremost cause of infection and account for the largest number of deaths all over the world.

The application of mosquito repellents in the form of mosquito coils, electronic mosquito repellents, mosquito repellent creams, herbal mosquito lotions and plants help keep mosquitoes away. In addition, insecticides sprayed on flowers could also help.

However some individuals could become allergic to these ways and suffer from allergies of the skin, nasal cavity and throat. So it is highly advisable and environmentally friendly to take into account plants to repel mosquitoes.

Well-liked Water Activities For The Backyard

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

When it grows hot, most people head out the door. A great deal go to a public pool, a river, lake or the beach, but others would rather stay in their own backyard. Some people are lucky enough to have a pool in their back garden, but not everyone has the space or the money. However, the majority of people like getting wet in order to cool down.

In this article, we will look at some of the things that you do can in the backyard involving water to help you stay cool. The first one is the one we have already touched on and the one home improvement that almost everybody would have if they could. A pool. People love the concept of having a backyard pool.

If your budget cannot stretch to a substantial in ground pool, you could buy a smaller above-ground pool. These above-ground pools are a lot cheaper, and while not large enough to swim in, they can certainly get thought of as large plunge pools. Half a dozen people can have a lot of fun in one of these pools.

If this is not feasible, what about a Jacuzzi or a hot tub? There is a great deal of flexibility in hot tubs these days. You can have them built into all types of nooks and crannies in the garden.

You can also get a hot tub of any size you like: two, foru, six, eight individuals and each person with a moulded chair with its own hydrotherapeutic directional water jets, so that you can play the jets on any areas of your body that you like.

If this is out of the question as well, what of a few garden water sprinklers? You could have plastic waterproof garden furniture and sit under the sprinklers simulating rain. This is an easy and very cheap way of cooling off when it is very warm.

You could hand everyone in your garden a water pistol to squirt everybody with. This might sound a little silly but kids and a lot of adults actually enjoy it. Similar to this, you could fill a few dozen balloons up with water and use them for throwing at each other like having your own paint ball competition without getting dirty.

Water games are immense fun and a decent manner of keeping cool when the sun is beating down in the summer. Just one word of warning - sunburn. Water will cool you down and you might not realize that you are burning. Make sure that everybody applies waterproof suntan lotion of a factor that is applicable to the level of sunshine in your area.

Why You Should Install A Pool Alarm

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Do you own a swimming pool or are you thinking of having one fitted? If so, then it is recommended that you have a pool alarm installed as well. You could be wondering if you really require such an alarm, but all will be revealed in the rest of this piece. A pool alarm can be incorporated into your existing burglar alarm system, if it is flexible enough.

One of the reasons for installing a pool alarm is that it might be required by law, national or local. Numerous kids have been drowned skinny dipping in a neighbour’s pool when they are away on holiday.

Some local authorities insist on putting up fences, but they are basically ineffectual, so the move is towards pool alarms. This does not really have to be costly because most people who can afford a pool will have a home alarm system already.

If your local authority does not have requirements for alarms already, it may be worth checking out what legislation is in the pipeline. Most of the modern pool alarms are activated while there is a disturbance at water level, so they are good for deterring night-time aquatic intruders.

However, it obviously does not only warn of interlopers, occasionally people fall into the pool because they are drunk. The alarm will permit you to rescue them. It will also warn of children falling into the pond, which is a continuous source of anxiety for parents with pools.

Because a great deal of pool owners are no longer young and their children are grown up, they often wonder why they require to secure their pool. Well, one decent reason, besides saving lives, is that it can reduce your insurance premium. To be blunt, it shows that you are trying and so reduces your legal responsibility.

Pool safety devices are easy to install, particularly if you already have a warning device, scanners and siren installed on your property. For most people who can afford a pool, the price of an alarm is off-set against the peace of mind that it will deliver is fairly negligible.

While you go searching for a pool alarm, there are lots of places for you to look, but the best place to go first of all is the supplier of your existing home security system. This is because they will be the best people to be able to integrate the two systems so that you do not have two sets of sirens, two sets of detectors and two sets of everything else.

Once you have had a pool alarm fitted, you have one further moral obligation and that is to make certain that it works. This is simple. Set your alarm and jump into the water. Reset the alarm and walk up to your pool. In both circumstances, the pool alarm should have been triggered.

You must check your alarm each month or two in conjunction with checking your existing home security system. This is a necessary preventive step, because you cannot expect items to keep working for years without needing some maintenance.

Garden Swimming Pool Accessories

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Millions of people love to swim in their gardens about the world. Swimming and playing in the water is great fun, even if you have to go to a pond, pool, a river or the sea to do it. in order to make full use of a garden pool, you really need to live in a place where the weather is warm. The owner also needs to have some money as pool maintenance fees are high.

Therefore, when people have gone to the trouble of having a garden pool installed, they also like to have the pool used as often or as much as they can. You can encourage your friends and family to use the pool more often by making it more fun and more comfortable to do so. Pool accessories or swimming accessories are a way of achieving this.

People like to be in the water, so you could make it straightforward for them by using poolside furniture that will float when supporting an adult. There are various items like floating chairs, floating tables and plastic inflatable lidos that will keep you and your guests in contact with the water. Good floating furniture will also support people out of the water, cheap gear will not.

If you like the concept of floating in your pool whilst sitting on a chair reading a book, this sort of furniture is for you. Lots of these seats have an in-built glass holder and float so that your waist is at the water line, although this really depends on the chair and the person sitting in it.

Then there are floating sun loungers which do roughly the same thing as a floating chair, except they tend to keep your whole body out of the water so that you can get an even sun tan. Inflatable lidos or rafts are comparable items, although the inflatable lido or camp bed is a very cheap item compared with the more solid floating seats and loungers.

Other objects that you could use to increase the enjoyment of your garden pool are aquatic games. You could string up a water polo net or a water volley ball net in order to get people moving. Beach balls are another good idea for encouraging play in the pool. If you are on your own, you could only float about in an inflated truck tyre. They are very comfortable and very cheap.

If you are dead set on relaxation at your pool, you could build a poolside bar. The bar stools could be in the water, if your pool is large enough, otherwise you could incorporate the pool bar into a breakfast bar where you can prepare and eat light meals. Weighty meals are not good for swimmers anyway.

Pool accessories or swimming accessories will intensify your enjoyment of your pool and make your friends and family wait for you next invitation to come over for a swim impatiently. Most of these devices do not have to be expensive either.

Simple Ideas For Inside Or Outdoor Kitchens

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Is your kitchen a dull and uninteresting area to work in? It does not have to be like that, you can modify it fairly easily either yourself or by getting in professionals to do it for you. The trick is to know what you want before you take a sledge hammer to your present kitchen.

So, before you go about taking down what you already have, go about collecting ideas for replacement. You can get fantastic ideas from the home refurbishment TV programmes, from home design journals, by looking at friends’ kitchens and by reading my tips below.

Perhaps the best place to begin is to think about how to reflect your own personal style. This could be a broad trend like farmhouse, Tuscan, Mexican, modern, or it could be a little bit of many styles to make up your own. However, do not forget that there is a lot of scope to convey your own individuality even if you select a broad style.

One trap to avoid is attempting to get all the latest gadgets from a broad style. For example, if you follow the modern broad trend to its logical end, your kitchen will look like a cold, clinical hotel or hospital kitchen full of stainless steel. If you like all that kind of equipment , then okay, but it is uncomfortable for a family to feel at home in.

If money is short, you could just repaint the units a different colour and replace the handles. That will make a colossal difference. Altering the background lighting is another pretty cheap way of altering the accent of your kitchen. Install subtle lighting under the wall units and if you already have those, try adding some spot lights to the ceiling and if you already have those, try adding some wall sconces for candles.

If you have beautiful pots and pans or want to get a set, why not show them off by screwing a rack to the wall from which to hang your pots and pans? it adds a very interesting effect to any kitchen.

You can also make a huge change to the kitchen (or any room for that matter) by altering the flooring. Solid wood is gorgeous, but if you cannot afford that, you could try veneered floor covering or stone, if the floor will take the weight. It is a good idea to endeavor to use the kitchen flooring to reinforce the broad image of your kitchen’s new style.

If you do not already have one, think about creating an outdoor kitchen for use when the weather permits. An outdoor kitchen certainly frees up a lot of room and ‘usage’. People flow to the outdoor kitchen when the weather is bright and your indoor living space suddenly seems less cluttered.

Last, but not least, the kitchen table. Just changing the style or shape of your kitchen table will have a big impact on the general look of your kitchen. Go from timber to glass or from square to round.
