Can You Fast For Fitness?

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

A lot of people do not understand their bodies. That much is obvious because they think that fasting will help them become fitter. They feel convinced that their bodies will feed off their surplus fat and that they will lose weight as a result. They also appear to imagine that they will automatically end up with more muscle, just in the right places too. Some take up fasting for fitness because they think that it will rid them of the toxins in their bodies.

Another belief that these fasters have is that they are will be able to flush out all of the toxins in their bodies by drinking plenty of water while not eating food. Even if this is true, it would be a lengthy procedure that would mean that you would have to fast for at least five to seven days though in order to conclude the detox process, although it is still not clear scientifically whether fasting is the right tactic for those that seek fitness.

There are many other routes to fitness that do work well though. For example, you can cut back the amount of food that you consume. Cutting back is not fasting, it is dieting and it is not only far more effectual, it is also far less difficult. This, combined with drinking plenty of water and increasing your amount of physical exercise will help you to become fitter.

If you drink a lot of soda like cola or lemonade, which are full of sugar, like a lot of kids do, or lots of cups of sugared tea or coffee, like a lot of adults do, then just replacing those drinks for water or weak tea will help you lose weight fairly rapidly even if you do not make any other changes to your diet or your amount of activity.

It is also possible to damage your body if you take on on a demanding exercise regime only relying on body fat to keep you going. Your body probably will not be able to deliver enough energy to fuel such a change, because your metabolism will be too low.

Someone going about it in this way, can become very weak and dizzy. It is not a good idea to run the risk of injury because you have not given your body all the energy it requires to complete the tasks you are requiring it to perform.

It is best to consult a physician before you make any changes to either your diet or your fitness program. Confer with your doctor about your thoughts on fasting and fitness. They will be able to inform you whether they feel it is something you can try or whether it is simply too dangerous.

Fasting is all right if you have do it for religious purposes, but do not attempt much physical exertion. Ask a Muslim how he or she feels during Ramadan! Fasting for long periods can lead to high blood pressure and even liver damage. So, be very wary before attempting to starve yourself fit, there are much better ways.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with lose weight fast and safe. If you have an interest in losing weight, too, please go over to our website now at Why Can’t I Lose Weight?

Keeping Your Dog Motivated

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Keeping the attention of a dog while training is not always an easy task. Dogs are very easily distracted, and it is important to not allow the dog training sessions to be ruined by boredom. Making dog training fun for the dog and the human alike is essential to making a happy, well-adjusted and well-trained dog.

You should provide random positive stimuli throughout the day in order to keep the attention of the dog. Doing things the dog enjoys, like walking in the park, riding in the car, and playing with other dogs, are good methods to keep the dog’s attention, but you must reward him for small successes.

For instance, to thank the dog for coming to you when you call him, tell your dog to come to you, without giving any ideas about going for a walk, a car ride, or other treats.

After your dog has come to you and obediently sat down, attach the leash and start the reward. This can be either the before-mentioned walk in the park, ride in the car, or anything else the dog enjoys doing.

Providing some sort of reward, whether a treat, a special outing, or just a scratch behind the ears, every time the dog does something you want, is a good way to keep your dog motivated while you are dog training.

If the dog knows something good is going to happen every time he follows your commands, he will be more motivated to do want you tell him every time.

Distraction training.

When training any dog, it is important to not let distractions disrupt the training. The dog must be taught to ignore distractions, such as other people, other dogs, other animals and loud noises, and focus on what is being taught These kinds of distractions can also be used as rewards when training the dog to come when called.

For example, if your dog enjoys playing with other dogs, whether in a local dog park or with the neighbour’s dogs, let him play freely with those other dogs. Then go into the park or yard and call your dog.

When he comes to you, give him lots of praise, treats and other rewards, then immediately allow the dog to go back to playing with his pals. Repeat this a few times and praise the dog every time he comes to you.

The dog will quickly learn that coming to you means good things (treats and praise) and not bad ones (being taken away from the park).

This so-called distraction training is one of the most difficult things for your dog to learn, because dogs are social animals by nature, and breaking away from the pack is one of the most difficult things you can ask your dog to do. Most dogs will be understandably unwilling to leave their doggy companions, but it is vital to persist in dog training.

Training the dog to come to you when you call can require some creativity on your behalf at first. For instance, waving one of his favourite toys, or a lure, is a good way to get your dog’s attention and put the focus back on you. If your dog has been clicker trained, a quick click can be a good motivator as well in dog training.

Once the dog begins to become used to coming when called, you can begin to reduce and then stop the visual cues and focus on getting the dog to respond to your voice alone. It is vital that your dog responds to voice commands alone, since you will not always have a toy or other lure to hand.

5 Great Things You Can Do In The Mountains

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Do you think you’re heading to the mountains and asking yourself what you could get into? There are many terrific adventures out in the wild and depending on exactly how much time you might have is dependent upon exactly how adventurous you may be.

1. Fishing - If you are in the mountains, angling in a cool mountain stream for trout is a must. Fly fishing has been a popular fishing method since people begun fishing with hooks. Fishing for trout seems be getting hot by May and continue throughout the summer. Salmon fishing is good between September and December in most areas. Be sure to study up on the area you are going and find out what is biting when you are going to be there. There are also some big bass in mountain lakes as well as crappie and other species.

2 Biking - Finding a cool biking trail can be tough to find and really depends on where you are. In Alabama, we are lucky to have a number of genuinely amazing trails. Our state parks have done a nice job of building wonderful mountain bike paths. Bike riding is enjoyable to do in groups or alone. Always study your trail before you set out and make sure you have the proper tools. I usually bring an Allen wrench for my brakes and a container of air with a patching kit! Always wear a helmet while your cycling! A helmet can save your life if you strike a tree or a rock!

3. Boating and Kayaking - Floating down the creek in a Canoe or Kayak is a great way spend early summer. Some people fish, some people take pictures and others just enjoy the views from another perspective. Remember to always wear a life jacket and never underestimate the power of water. One minute the river can be calm and slow and the next you can be white water rapids. The best way to learn about the river is to go on guided floats. Many parks and lakes have boat rentals at affordable rates!

4. Hunting - Depending on what time of the year you vacation determines what you can hunt. You can find hunting clubs or guides for day hunts or for full retreats! Many areas have prime deer hunting, Turkey, elk, moose, quail, chukar, duck and many others. Also many ranches and guides offer hunting and vacation packages. Enjoy fine dining and fine hospitality on a vacation hunt! Have the hospitality of a bed and breakfast with the adventure of a wild game hunt.

5.Snow Skiing - Snow skiing in the United States is a fun winter activity and can be enjoyed by anyone. There are many great locations to snow ski throughout the US. Some resorts have advanced snowmaking systems that allow more snow and in some cases extends the season.

Be sure and share your experience, so don’t forget your camera! Just remember don’t become too comfortable around wild animals, many are territorial and don’t take kind to anyone invading their space.

What’s in a Dog’s Name?

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Dog owners will explain that there is no proven formula for selecting a good name for a new dog or puppy. Whether they have to come up with girl or boy dog names, they will normally pick a name that sounds trendy or a name they like rather than putting some thought into what the name actually means. Popular boy dog names have meanings, as do human names, so more often than not the meaning will not suit the dog it is given to. Here we give a list of the top five boy dog names and what they really mean.

Generally, first thing you have to do when you obtain a new dog or puppy is choose a name for him or her. For most dog owners, this doesn’t require much thought. They just choose a dog name out of thin air and that is the name by which the unfortunate animal will be known forever. However, there is something you should think about when going through dog names in order to make sure that you choose the right one.

Firstly, dogs can sense attitude and tone of voice better than we can. If you choose a dog name for comedy value or after someone you dislike, your dog will see straight through you. As a result, their attitudes may change or they may refuse to respond to your commands. Dogs’ names should mean something but should not be detrimental to their development so you should really take the decision of the dog name seriously.

Despite dogs being very clever creatures, they can’t process the same amount of information that we can. As a result, dog names should never be more than two syllables long. If they are more than that, most dogs will not respond. Max, Sam, Becky, Lady, Molly and the like are excellent dog names because they are short and the syllables are easily heard. They respond to these dog names and that will improve your chances of training them successfully.

However, dogs’ names should help them mould an identity of their own. Common names don’t really allow them to do that, so finding something simple but unusual can help their characters grow a great deal without damaging their willingness to respond to a command.

Max: This is probably the most popular boy dog name and the meaning is probably the reason why many people choose it for their dog. It literally means “the most”. After all, every dog owner thinks that their dog is the ‘most’.

Jake: Jake is short for Jacob, which means “champion”. This is a suitable boy dog name, if your puppy takes over the whole house within a short time of getting inside it!

Buddy: Buddy is a familiarization of Budd, which means “messenger”. This boy dog name may suit a working dog or one you might possibly train to retrieve the newspaper from the porch in the morning. It is a very popular boy dog name throughout the USA.

Bailey: The boy dog name Bailey is French and means “steward”. This is fairly apt if your dog is responsible and sensible, so it is suitable for a Newfoundland or collie puppy.

Sam: Sam apparently means “an answer to prayers”. This is a great boy dog name for dogs that are easy to train and are very little work!

Few new dog owners consider a name’s meaning when picking a boy dog’s name, so instead of just going ahead with your first idea, it may be worth taking the time to find a dog’s name that is really suitable for your dog. After all, it doesn’t cost you anything to spend some time considering your dog’s name.

Tanning Pills

Monday, May 10th, 2010

There are certainly a lot of people who worship the sun for its power to give them a better skin colour. When you think about this, it is quite plain to see, that these people are looking at ways that they can obtain a bronzed skin.

The methods that some people employ in order to get a suntanned skin include getting a tan outdoors from the sun itself, but also, tanning beds, tanning booths, spray on tanners, self tanning lotions and tanning pills. In part, the decision which of these methods you select, depends on the length of time that you can spare to get a good tan.

Some people go for tanning pills, but in reality, they work a little differently from the other, more usual methods. For example, lotions work by spreading some of the liquid, usually oil based, on different sections of your body. It is your choice which parts of you, you want to change the colour of. However, tanning pills need to be ingested orally and so will affect the whole of your body. Furthermore, you will have to choose which tanning pills to use, because, unlike lotions, if you use tanning pills, you will have fewer colour choices.

You should be well aware of this important point, because you will need to select a depth of tan which does not differ too unflatteringly with the colour of other parts of your body like your hair, eyes, lips, etc. You can buy these tanning pills in the same stores as you purchase your other tanning requirements.

You should however consult the label to find out if there are any precautions you will need to take. For example, one of the most important precautions that you can take, is to see if you might have an allergic reaction to the tanning pills.

Apart from this though, you might also want to find out just what all the media hype over tanning pills is all about. This research will also assist you to decide which of the different tanning pills on the market is the right one for you. In addition, if you look on the Internet, you will get the statistics on the number of people who have encountered problems after using these tablets. At this point in time, you will discover that there are three firm favourites when it comes to tanning pills.

These tanning pills are called EluSun, Deep Tan and Mayan Secrets. The main ingredient for two of these makes is carerenoids. This substance causes the top layer of skin to turn a pinkish colour. The colour might darken over time, but it is necessary for you to keep taking these pills for as long as you require the tan.

The main disadvantage of tanning pills is that these pills are just as risky to your health as sun bathing on the beach for hours at a time. Once you have found out all the information you can, you will have to decide whether taking tanning pills is worth the risk to your health, just to have suntanned skin colour.

Why Do Dogs Snore?

Monday, May 10th, 2010

It is not unusual for pet owners to permit their pets to sleep with them at night. In deed, one third of pet owners have at some time, permitted their pets to sleep on their beds. Dogs provide a companionship that can’t be given by any other kind of animal. But this doesn’t mean to say that it is unlikely for some people to let their cats and another pets sleep with them too.

It is made easier too because dogs have a sleep pattern that is very much like ours. Dogs often rely on their owners with complete trust, which makes them a bit more relaxed during the night. This explains why most dogs fall to sleep easily and later on, enter into deep sleeps where REM sleep activities can occur. In fact, once dogs enter this stage, the owner needs to call them several times before they can truly be woken up.

Certainly, lots of us have observed a dog ‘running’ during sleep and barking while asleep too. These dogs are believed to be dreaming. Breathing patterns can also be observed among dogs while they are asleep. For example, there are breeds which breathe heavily and there are breeds which breathe more lightly. The dogs that are heavy breathers are much more likely to snore than those which do not breathe quite so heavily.

Some people find that dogs that snore are quite a nuisance during the night, depending on the degree and frequency of the phenomenon. Like with humans, there are various reasons why dogs snore, although most have to do with the blocking of the passage of air in the throat, which in turn is caused by the collapse of certain areas along the throat. It is the same problem as with human beings.

A dog that snores very loudly ought to be examined for different issues to evaluate which treatment could be best provided. Some dogs are especially susceptible to some allergies that can cause constriction in the airway. It may also be that there is some excess tissue in the areas that are inhibiting proper breathing. It is best for a veterinarian to check out different factors through careful evaluation of the dog’s anatomical features and physical symptoms in general.

Is you dog obese? I ask this because, as with humans, obese dogs are more likely to snore than thin ones. This is because they will have more tissue surrounding their windpipes. Therefore, they have excess tissue hanging around their throats, which can cause obstructions. Once this problem has been corrected, the chances of snoring will be reduced. This would not only be healthy for your dogs, but you may eventually enjoy a decent night’s sleep too.

Snoring also has something to do with the general facial features. Some dogs seem to have pushed-in faces which narrows their air passages to a certain degree. The construction of their nasal passages also largely contributes to their difficulty of breathing. They are pretty much like humans with a cold, who are forced to breathe using only twenty-five percent of their nostril capacity. Dog breeds with shorter faces need to expend lots of effort to breathe properly. It takes them more work to control breathing and they are also more prone to snoring.

Minor surgery can give your dog great relief. Be sure though that, before any decision is made, you are well educated about the potential risks and consequences of surgery to stop a dog snoring. Most procedures are irreversible, so careful thought must be given to any operation you permit. In fact, it is best to follow the guidelines offered by your veterinary doctor.

Golfing For Beginners: Part 4

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

We have all the seen the bewilderingly long and yet accurate drives of Tiger Woods. When he hits the ball, it flies through the air only to land in the bang middle of the fairway, 300 odd metres away.

How can you not become jealous as you wonder if you could ever dare to hope to drive like that? It is consoling to know, that long drives are not crucial to the game of golf.

Enter the short game for without good short game skills, all the long drives are not worth a light.

We call the ’short game’ those shots that get you onto the green from roughly a hundred feet away from the hole, no matter whether it’s from the fairway, a bunker, the rough or a drop zone. It includes all chips, sand shots and pitches.

It is in this middle stage of the game of golf that you get to use the higher numbered clubs, your pitching iron and sand wedge or lob wedge.

You will find practice areas on most golf courses. You really ought to spend some time practising hitting the ball onto the green from various distances. Try to hit the ball into a ten-foot circle in the centre of the green at first. Experiment using your wedges, but remember that what works well for one person, might not work so well for you because your particular swing is an unknown factor in the equation.

After you get accustomed to performing this drill consistently, it’s time to start practising in a sand trap. Knowing how to get the ball out of a trap will cut your score dramatically.

The way to do it is to plant your feet firmly in the sand with your left foot turned to face the hole. See an imaginary 4-inch circle around the ball and try to hit the outer edge of that circle.

Try to take up lots of sand with the ball and swing completely through as you normally would. Don’t pull back on your swing at all when or after you have hit the ball. It should spring up gently onto the green and stop dead in its tracks. This doesn’t work very well though unless the sand is quite soft and dry. On harder or compacted surfaces, you might need to avoid actually hitting the sand completely.

However, as in every skill in the game of golf, it is only continual practice that will help you to improve your game.

Are you a rookie to golfing?? We have some great our website at tips for the beginner golfer on our website at Golfing Tips for Beginners

Tennis Psychology (Part 2)

Friday, April 30th, 2010

The hard-hitting, unpredictable, net-rushing tennis-player is a person of impulse. There is no real system to his/her attack, no comprehension of your game. He will make brilliant coups at the drop of a hat, mostly by instinct; but there is no, mental power of consistent thinking. It is an interesting type of character.

The really dangerous player is the one who mixes his/her strategy from back to fore court under the direction of an ever-alert mind. This/her is the player to learn from. He is a player with a definite intention. A player who has an answer to every problem you present him in your game. He is the most subtle opponent in the world of tennis. He is of the school of Brookes. Second only to him is the player of slavish determination that sets his/her mind on one strategy and sticks to it, bitterly, fiercely battling to the bitter end, with no thought of changing his gameplan.

He is the player whose psychology is fairly easy to understand, but whose mental viewpoint is difficult to derail, because he never allows himself to think of anything but his game. This/her player is your Johnston or your Wilding. I respect the intelligence of Brookes more, but I admire the tenacity of purpose of Johnston.

Choose your kind from your own mental pattern, and then work out your game along the lines most suited to you. When two men are in the same class as regards stroke and equipment, the determining factor in any given match is the mental viewpoint. Luck, so-called, is often grasping the psychological advantage of a change of flow in the game, and turning it to your own advantage. We hear a lot about the “shots players have made.” Few realize the importance of the “shots players have missed.”

The science of missing shots is just as important as that of making them, and at times a miss by an inch is of more value than a return that is killed by your opponent. Let me tell you why. A player drives you far out of court with an angle-shot. You run hard to it, and having reached it, you drive it hard and fast down the side-line, missing it by an inch. Your opponent is surprised and put off his stride, knowing that your shot might just as well have gone in as out. He will expect you to attempt it again and he will not risk it next time. He will attempt to play the ball, and may make an error. You have thus stolen some of your opponent’s confidence, and increased his/her chance of error, just because of a miss.

However, if you had merely tapped back that ball, and it had been killed, your opponent would have felt even more confident of your inability to put the ball out of his/her reach, while you would only have been winded for no reason.

Let’s just say that you had succeeded with that shot down the sideline. It was a seemingly impossible get. First it amounts to TWO points, in that it took one away from your opponent that should have been his/her and gave you one that you should never have had. Second it also worries your opponent, because he feels that he has lost a big opportunity.

The psychology involved in a tennis match is very interesting, but easily understood. Both men start with equal chances. Once one player establishes a real advantage, his/her confidence rises, while his/her opponent worries, and his/her mental viewpoint becomes poor. The only objective of the first player is to hold his/her lead, thereby maintaining his/her confidence.

If the second player pulls even or draws ahead, the inevitable reaction occurs with an even more drastic contrast in psychology. There is the natural confidence of the leader, but coupled with the great stimulus of having turned a seemingly inevitable defeat into a probable victory. The reverse is the case of the other player, who is apt to lose confidence and play worse. The collapse of his game plan soon follows.

If you are into the psychology of tennis, you should go to our website called Tennis Tips for Beginners

Creating A Promotional Strategy

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Even if you were to invent something earth-shattering, you would not earn any money from of it if you left the invention on your desk. The only means you can turn a profit from it is by selling it and in order to achieve this, you have to tell people that it exists, that it is for sale and where they may obtain it from. In other words, you have to advertise it.

The US Patents Office has issued thousands patents for items that never made it and many of those did not make it, not because they were not excellent concepts, but because their inventors did not know what to do with them. A business is more or less the same as a new invention. It has to be advertised, unless it is situated in the middle of the only street in town.

Having already started the business, it is to be expected that, you have already worked out your intended market and evaluated the demand for your goods or services. Now you have to convert those potential customers into contented customers and this is where your promotional strategy comes in.

A promotional strategy is nothing more than a for reaching your intended market, which is of course the people most likely to need your services or products. At its simplest, your promotional strategy might consist of just hanging a sign over your door and relying on word of mouth from satisfied customers to spread, so doing your advertising for you.

In some cases, this is indeed all the advertising a business needs, but the circumstances are not that common really. It works, if you are operating in a very small town or if your product or service is unique or very specialized or if you enjoy a long-standing good reputation. However, normally, customers require more details to go on before they will be drawn to your business.

Therefore, the objective of your promotional strategy should be to get in touch with the greatest quantity of potential customers by the most economical use of your means, which may include money, personnel and facilities. This means that you have to divine the channels of communication most used by your potential customers and try to get a message to them through those. This is normally constrained by a budget.

Advertising involves the purchasing of time or space in the media you have selected in order to market your business to your intended market. You then have to come to a decision which form of advertising you are going to use: institutional or product advertising. Institutional advertising promotes the firm’s name as in: ‘Larry’s Boot Shop - The Best In Town’, whereas product advertising is more specific and might read: ‘Nike Walking Boots - 30% off at Larry’s. Offer Finishes Friday!’

Both types of advertising can be effective and lend themselves better to some media than to others. Institutional advertising is better done on shop signs, sign-written vans or windows or promotional calendars, that is, static, long-term, business name advertising and product advertising is better done by newspaper, magazine, radio and TV, where one-off special offers can be promoted.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with researching promotional wall calendars. If you have an interest in calendars, organizers or promotional calendars, please go over to our website now at Promotional Desk Calendars

The Birthday Barbecue Party

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

A lot of people over the age of twenty have a sort of love-hate relationship with birthdays. They love to have a party and be the centre of attention and a lot of fun, but they hate getting older. But I believe that people should celebrate their birthdays. After all, you enjoy going to someone else’s birthday party and so you are morally obliged to put one on for others too.

And birthday parties ought to be a lot of fun. It does not have to be a children’s type party, of course, but you could still dress up and play games.

You could have a barbecue for all your friends and family and do it cowboy style. Have a barn dance that would make ‘JR’ proud. The food for this is straightforward enough. Begin by providing plenty of Texas sized spare ribs, half-pounder hamburgers, T-bone steaks, and jumbo size hot dogs with loads of bread and salad.

For music, it has to be country and everybody has to wear cowboy clothing, although it would probably be better to leave the shootin’ irons at home. Annie Oakley style clothes for the ladies and Buffalo Bill style for the gents. If it is going to be a big party, ask everyone to bring their own favourite dish, in true Southern style. That would be a great way to celebrate an adult’s birthday for the family.

If you do not go much on the macho cowboy idea, you could try a Caribbean style barbecue. Dress in flash short sleeved shirts and vivid colours or swimming costumes. The music could be reggae and calypso and the food would be grilled fish and chicken with salad and plenty of fresh fruit. Provide hot and not so hot chilli dips and barbecue sauces. You could have a go at limbo dancing too, that is always good for a laugh.

Or perhaps you would rather a humorous barbecue party and all dress up like the hillbilly family ‘The Clamperts’! That would be fun. The men could wear old velvet hats and old clothes tied up with string like Jed and Jethro and the women could come as Ellie May or Granny. I think that the authentic food like possum and bullfrog might be difficult to get hold of in some areas, but you could just supply what you want for this one. Steaks, hamburgers and fried fish; bread and salad with cake to finish.

Another favourite form of barbecue for a birthday do is the Luau. An Hawaiian barbecue is really something else. You will need bright colours and plenty of tropical Hawaiian decorations. You could provide half coconut shells for drinking out of and lots of coconut and pineapple based drinks. You ought to ask your guests to wear loud Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts, provide plenty of leis and hula music and a ‘loudest Hawaiian shirt’ contest is de rigour.

If none of those takes your fancy, how about a ‘Vicars and Tarts’ barbecue? You can use your own imagination on that one though. More tea and crumpet, vicar?

If your barbecue party is to continue into the evening and it might get nippy, you could hire or borrow some patio heaters, just so as to give you a few additional hours in the garden.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with the electric outdoor heater. If you are interested in patio heaters too, please click through to Residential Patio Heaters.
