A Romantic Holiday In St. Thomas, The US Virgin Islands

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

If you and your partner are interested in a romantic break, you may have a difficult time deciding on a locality because there is such a large number of vacation destinations to choose from. However, I would like to suggest St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands, which lies in the Caribbean.

St. Thomas is well-known for its romantic holidays. Hundreds of thousands of couples have been vacationing in St. Thomas in order to get pleasure from an exclusive, intimate, and romantic break. If you are asking yourself why St. Thomas is such as wonderful place for romantic breaks, you ought to read more about St. Thomas on their official Internet web site.

The Caribbean, in general, is well known for its magnificent, tropical weather and this sort of environment is many couples’ ideal romantic vacation spot. The lovely weather means unmatched opportunities for swimming and other beach activities. If seeing all the good-looking people in their bathing costumes does not turn you on then nothing will!.

However, do not think that St. Thomas is only intended for younger people. It caters very well for people of all age groups, although some resorts are ‘adults only’. So, if you will have to check up on any age restrictions on some of the private beaches. Some may be Club 18-30, others may not admit under 18 year olds.

The ‘adults only’ resorts in St. Thomas are perfect for romantic vacations. The hotel rooms in these resorts are also of a superior class. Many of them have ocean views and large in room baths or jacuzzis. If you can get hold of one these rooms, you may not even care to go outside.

However, if you do want to go outside, many of St. Thomas’ beach resorts offer exceptional opportunities for all varieties of water sports like boat trips, snorkeling and assisted scuba diving tours. If you are not water-orientated or you want to try something on land then there is horseback riding too. Horse riding along the shoreline is very popular. Many resorts have their own specialist activities, so when you reserve your holiday, make sure you check out what is accessible to you in that district.

There are abundant opportunities for shopping and sight-seeing on your own as well. You could hire a car and journey up the coast or inland to one of the national parks, where you may see wildlife or find a secluded restaurant serving delectable local food.

Last, but definitely not least, in the list of romantic things to do in St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands is to get wed. There are fewer restrictions on marriage for American couples than on mainland America. The only observances are a $50 fee and an eight day posting of bans to declare your intention to wed. You can get married at almost any time of the day or night. So, a sunset wedding on the beach is easily workable and is, in fact, one of the most popular romantic reasons for young couples coming to St. Thomas.

Taking A Romantic Cruise In Paris

Monday, November 21st, 2011

If you are feeling romantic and you want to be alone with your loved one in a romantic place far from humdrum distractions, why not go to Paris and take a cruise? The cruise ships are gorgeous and offer haute cuisine with fine wines and a wide range of dishes. Service on board is superb and if they know that it is a special trip for you, they will go out of their way to make it even more special.

Just by selecting the city of Paris as your venue, you will be conveying the impression of romance, because as everybody knows, Paris has the reputation of being the capital of the world of romance.

So, how do you go about booking one of these cruises? Well, obviously, first of all, you have to be in Paris. This is not a problem, if you live in Europe as there are flights and sleeper trains. If you are American, you will have to take the longer-term view and start saving for next year.

Once in your hotel in Paris, you can either ask reception for details or go to one of the many Tourist Information Centres, where everyone speaks English. The cruise line staff will pick you up from your hotel on the appointed day, so that you will not have the hassle of having to find your way through a strange, busy city on your own.

Once on board, the pampering starts with your welcoming on board and a free drink to ignite the fires of romance. You will enjoy four or more hours of this, depending on which cruise you decide on, but they are all wonderfully romantic voyages aboard beautiful cruise liners.

Generally speaking, the cruise will start on the left bank of the river Seine, usually in the vicinity of the Eiffel Tower. Some of these boats are made of a type of perspex, so that your view of the streets and monuments is unimpeded. And of course, all the sights are lit up at night and in quite a stunning fashion too. You will also be able to gaze downwards into the water itself.

As you cruise on this glass boat you will be entertained by some of the finest musicians that Paris can offer you. Solo instrumentalists; quartets; classical music; solo artiste singers or a duet. There are also cruises with more modern music as well, but I don’t find them as romantic as the more traditional stuff. However, you can take all these particulars into account when you book your romantic cruise in Paris.

You will not only pass by celebrated landmarks, you will also pass very close by them and even underneath them. Famous bridges; Notre Dame; the Louvre, and many more. Not only that, but you will see all these incredible historical monuments while being pampered by the best hosts that Paris has to offer and drinking fine wines and champagne, seated at the bow of the cruiser in luxury.

Once your romantic cruise and your meal are over, you will be taken to a lavish show on the Champs Elysees, where you will be given a half bottle of champagne on entry. There is no need to worry about driving, so let your hair down and enjoy yourselves.

When you have had enough of the high life, you will be transported back to your hotel, in the same manner that you were picked up. However, there are other choices too. You may want to go back to the hotel on a romantic horse and carriage, it will maintain that romantic mood.

Once you get back to your hotel, why not both get in the bath together? Light a few scented candles, open another bottle of wine and play some soft music. It will be an evening you will both remember for the rest of your lives, I promise you.

The Best Way To Prepare Gift Baskets?

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

When it comes to selecting gift baskets, not many people understand how to do it right. If you’re among those and are thinking of buying appreciation gift baskets, you’ve come to the right place. Worry no more as we’re about to know how to select gift baskets and what to fill them up with.

First of all, there are different gift baskets, of several types, for different occasions. When you’re looking to appreciate someone for something they have done, express your gratitude, thank them for a favor they bestowed upon you - you have gift baskets at your helm. Gift baskets are a unique proposition - they should reflect your feelings and at the same time think about the other person’s likes and dislikes.

I’ve also seen very creative gift baskets that make the recipient happy and convey the message very creatively. Recently, I saw a ‘You Rock’ gift basket full of snacks. The contents of the basket weren’t anything to talk about however the packaging and the theme was simply out of the world. On the condition that you’re giving it to the right person, these types of gifts would make a person really happy.

Even a rather simple, handwritten thank you note can do wonders in these occasions. People love the personal touch and it means a lot to those who really matter. You might want to handwrite the appreciation message and package the gift basket all yourself. This will raise the value of the gift basket immensely.

There are fun gift baskets, too. They are simple yet sophisticated. There are several types of baskets you could opt for. Say you’re giving a gift to your family. In this case, you may want to drop a fun family photo of yours. Besides that, some edibles will also be required. You need not pack it up with stuff no one is going to touch. They are costly and don’t serve any purpose. A can of soft-drinks, some chocolates, and some popcorn would do just fine. This would set you back by maybe $20 or so.

The occasion is of prime importance and not the content of the gift. The packaging, content, everything is just an add-on to the glare and glee of the occasion. You, your family and other loved ones get together on these occasions and gift baskets act as a medium to strengthen your love and bonding. Its under your control to live the moment to the fullest.

I’m hoping the content above helped you. I publish more about the same topic on appreciation gift baskets and fun gift baskets.

A History Of Stained Glass

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

No one really knows when stained glass was first invented because it happened before people really recorded history. However, some historians reckon that it was first used as an extravagance in the homes of wealthy Romans in the first century AD. Stained glass was eventually acclaimed as an art form in the fourth century as Christians started to worship openly and to construct intricate churches in which to celebrate their religion.

On the other hand, some historians demonstrate that there are signs in pre-Christian ruins that suggest that pagans used stained glass in their rites. Although we will probably never really know the start of stained glass, it is fairly clear that the spread of Christianity is directly related to the spread of use of stained glass.

The Gothic Era commenced in the 12th Century and stained glass windows became an essential element in the design of cathedrals. It really all started with the pioneering style of the St. Denis, France, where stained glass windows were used to convey light into the church itself and into the minds of its worshipers. Sadly, most of the stained glass in the St. Denis Cathedral was destroyed in the course of the French Revolution, but there are a few pieces left and even some complete windows on exhibit in Europe.

Gothic style stained glass was composed of strong lines, but these increasingly went out of fashion as the Renaissance commenced. During the Renaissance, artisans depicted better detail and more delicate colouring in order to add to the realism. Stained glass windows became more like paintings on glass than architectural features and some of the prominent elements such as lead lines disappeared. Because of the problems in expressing the great detail essential to the Renaissance period, the old style, which was original stained glass more or less died out.

In view of the fact that stained glass was used mostly by the Catholic Church, much of the work was destroyed during the reign of King Henry VIII after his split with the Pope. However, not only old stained glass windows were destroyed, but many of the glass making works were destroyed as well. However, religious strife was not the only cause of the decline of stained glass.

The style of the Baroque period was for more detailed murals, which necessitated the use of clear glass. Therefore, many of the remaining stained glass windows were permitted to decay, and furthermore not many new stained glass windows were produced. In the late 17th century, the public mood returned to the Gothic style of architecture, which produced a renewed interest in stained glass windows.

Artisans continued to paint directly onto the glass at first, but later tried to emulate the old leaden frames of medieval times. However, given that the original techniques had not been used for such a long time, they had become forgotten and the artisans of the period were unable to recreate the exact styles prevailing in Gothic stained glass.

During the 19th century, La Farge and Tiffany created new variations of stained glass. La Farge was interested in window designs, while Tiffany went into new areas like the Tiffany lamp shade.

Nowadays, stained glass artists are not limited by religious doctrines, although much of the work they do involves restoration. Modern stained glass is also used as the centre pane in front doors, especially uPVC doors, by rich and poor equally in the West.

U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s ‘Toys for Tots’ Program

Monday, June 6th, 2011

The U. S. Marine Corps Reserve has a sixty odd year old scheme to collect toys for tots from needy families both in the United States and in other countries. The aim is to save new unwrapped toys during October, November and December every year and then hand those toys out as Christmas presents to deprived children in the community in which the campaign is being conducted.

Their objective is to bring a message of hope to disadvantaged children in order to encourage them to become ‘responsible, productive, patriotic citizens’ in the words of their web site.

One of the main aims of Toys for Tots is to unite the communities where U.S Marine Reserve units are stationed for the three months of October, November and December each year in the gathering and distribution of new toys to children from less well-off families in order to help them experience the joys of Christmas.

One of the aspirations is that the recollection of receiving these gifts every year will encourage the kids to appreciate the communities where they live and take an active part in those communities when they become older.

Communities where there is no unit of U.S. marine Corps Reserves can also take part in the scheme but they must first register for authorization. These non-Marine groups will mostly, but not always, be ex-Marines.

These groups organize fund-raising events throughout the year in order to finance the purchase of new toys as donations of new toys do not always meet the groups’ needs. These fund-raising events could include sports days, golfing tournaments, bicycle races, swimming tournaments et cetera.

Toys for Tots started in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and handed out 5,000 toys for deprived children in the local region.

The original idea sprang from Major Hendrick’s wife, Diane, who had made a doll for a disadvantaged child. She gave it to her husband to give to a fitting charity. When he could not find one, she recommended that he start one himself, so he did just that.

The following year Marine Corps Reserve units across the country adopted the plan and it has been actively providing toys to disadvantaged tots ever since. Walt Disney got involved from the very beginning by designing the logo that the Marine Reserve charity still makes use of today.

Other celebrities to become involved in the early days were Nat ‘King’ Cole, Peggy Lee and Vic Damone, who recorded the Toys for Tots theme, which was written specially for the charity by Sammy Fain and Paul Webster.

Numerous celebrities have been played a part during the years. Celebrities like Bob Hope, John Wayne, Doris Day, Lorrie Morgan, Tim Allen, Kenny Rogers and Billy Ray Cyrus. First Lady Nancy Reagan served as the national Spokesperson in 1983 and First Lady Barbara Bush acted as the national Spokesperson in 1992. She wrote in her autobiography tenderly of her involvement with Toys for Tots and called it one of her favourite charities.

Choose Your Wedding Ring Wisely

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

There is a very large number of wedding rings available in the shops these days. In fact, you have the world of wedding rings to pick from. The high street shops in a large town have a pretty good selection, but the Internet lays the best jewellers and the best styles out for your perusal.

So, it is very important that you take your time when choosing one. Maybe the enormous choice of wedding rings makes that more difficult not easier. Diamond wedding rings have been the most popular since ordinary working people could afford them, before that a plain band of gold had to suffice, for people who could afford that much.

Nowadays, Western people have become more adventurous and they are choosing other stones like the stunningly beautiful blue sapphire. Some even deciding not to have a stone at all, going back to tradition, so to speak. However, there are plenty of examples of not so simple bands of gold too.

There is the Irish Claddagh ring with its characteristic two hands holding a crowned heart symbolizing love, friendship and loyalty; and there is the Celtic Knot with its intricately interwoven strands twisting and turning without end, standing for eternity and eternal love despite the twists and turns and difficulties of daily life.

So, choosing a wedding ring is not just a question of picking a beautiful wedding ring, you should be choosing one that says what you want it to say. You could look up on the Internet what the different metals and various stones symbolize traditionally. If you cannot find a ring that says what you want, consider having one made. It is not as expensive as you might think.

Tradition is a good thing when it comes to wedding rings. After all, you want your ring to express your eternal love and devotion for the person you are giving it to and your marriage could last fifty or sixty years, especially with people living longer these days. Hopefully, you will wear this ring for the rest of your life, so select a style that seems timeless to you.

Picking a wedding ring is not as straightforward as it looks, because you are going to be wearing your ring every day for the rest of your life, so it should be something that you will not get tired of in a couple years. You should look at and try on many rings in order to get one that feels comfortable. You will want a ring that does not look out of date in ten years time. The simplest method of doing that is to go for a traditional style, because those styles have already stood the test of time.

One last piece of advice is to ask the jeweller to attest to the total carat weight of the stones in the ring and the weight of each individual stone and the quality and weight of the metal (although it should be hallmarked) on paper, then if it gets lost or stolen you have something to show the insurance company.

Gourmet Chocolates For Your Paramour

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Almost everyone has a liking for chocolate, even if they would rather rebuff it. But some of us have a craze for it and if you tried gourmet chocolate, this would turn into a devotion. The sensation of its texture in your mouth as it melts is very pleasing and its richness takes this pleasure to a whole new level. Some people even say that they would rather chocolate over anything else.

Although chocolate is scrumptious, some chocolates are more enjoyable than others. A Snickers bar is full of chocolate but it is also stuffed with peanuts and caramel and the chocolate is not so great anyway. Thankfully, there are gourmet chocolates available to gratify any chocolate lover’s chocolate yearning.

There are enough different cacao inspired appetizing snacks out there to satisfy almost everyone. There are kinds of chocolate that some people almost certainly never have thought possible. Chocolates now even come in a chocolate-wine combination to serve as a decadent topping to a sweet.

Examples of the flavours you can get are: chocolate espresso merlot and chocolate raspberry cabernet. Many pure chocolate and wine lovers knew that wine and chocolate went well together, but would not have thought of mixing them in a sauce. However, when they are poured over ice-cream, they are a pure delight to the taste buds.

Chocolates called truffles of all styles are also available for those with an extra sweet tooth, whether you love dark, milk or white chocolate. There are also boxes of chocolate to suit everybody’s needs. They contain a wide variety of different gourmet chocolates. Some people really like coffee filled chocolates or cherry filled chocolates.

There are selection boxes of chocolates too which offer one or two of all the types of gourmet chocolates that that firm has to offer. Some of the combinations you will have heard of, others you will not. A selection box like this is a somewhat less expensive way of getting to know a manufacturer’s wares.

If you just want an normal bar of gourmet chocolate, then those are available too from select suppliers. It is best to look online or in Yellow Pages. I have seen dark, milk and white chocolate bars presented, but I prefer the individual bonbons, although a bar is easier to carry in your bag and it is the same high-quality chocolate, but without a filling..

These small, but delectable gourmet chocolates make perfect, romantic gifts for your Valenrine too. Also, if you know a chocolate lover, then they will greatly appreciate the complex taste of these gourmet delights. They will know that you have spent your time and money getting them the only gift they really wanted.

Online stores that sell these delicious treats often also have gift certificates available, so if you cannot pick the perfect gourmet chocolates you can certainly let them do it for themselves with your voucher.

Hand-Knitted Baby Blankets

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

What can you give the parents of a new-born baby who have everything? Parents who have already had a baby or two will already have objects like a crib, baby’s clothes, a pram and most other items, but the one gift that is always appreciated is a personalized or handmade knitted blanket. Home knitted baby blankets are much better than shop-purchased baby blankets and can either be passed down or kept to give to the baby twenty years later as an heirloom.

Up until fifty years ago, numerous individuals, such as aunts and grandmothers knitted and it was quite common to see hand-knitted baby blankets. This all but died out in the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties, but handcrafts have seen a resurgence in the new millennium. This has to be a positive sign. Coupled with this is the fact that modern wools, yarns and other fibres are stronger and safer than ever before.

That means that a hand-knitted baby blanket is a better gift than ever before. There are dozens of colours and textures which makes it easy for the knitter to match any theme that the parents may have decided on for the baby’s nursery.

A hand-knitted quilt or blanket is a very extraordinary gift which can either be passed down to the next baby or can be put away to be a present for the ‘baby’ at a later date, in the same way that a bride may put away her bridal gown for her daughter if she ever has one.

Whilst you are deciding on a design for your baby blanket, you ought to make safety your prime consideration. That ought to include thought for the size or the blanket. The blanket has to fit the cot exactly so that there are no dangerous folds or gaps. The weave should also be tight enough so that small fingers and toes cannot get caught up in them.

It is not a good idea to have beads sewn into the blanket either. That is because babies soon start teething and you do not want your baby to bite off a couple of beads and choke on them. Traditionally, parents used blue colours for a boy baby and pink for a girl and although that distinction blurred for a few decades it is being respected again so you will have to find out the sex of the baby - subtly if the knitted blanket is going to be a surprise gift.

There is no parent in the world that would not treasure a hand-knitted blanket or quilt for their new baby. It is a very special gift that certainly will be considered as an heirloom to be passed down through the family or kept as a very special twenty-first birthday present. Embroider your name in a corner so that the person you gifted it to will always remember you too.

Owen Jones, the writer of that piece, writes on a number of topics, but is now concerned with the Handmade Baby Blanket. If you want to know more, please visit our website at Woollen Blankets.

Children’s Rocking Chairs

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Comfort is very important to people, particularly to children. I do not mean comfort as derived from a soft cushion or a warm, dry bed, I mean comfort as in security. It is the feeling that cats and children get from sitting in a box rather than playing with the present that came in the box.

Or the comfort that some children derive from having their own special blanket, which is actually called a comforter by the majority of Americans. It is the sort of comfort that all babies and all children get from rocking

Babies almost certainly like being rocked because that was the sensation that they felt whilst mum was going about when they were still unborn. It is what mothers intuitively do when a child indicates its discomfort by crying and it is to be seen in many disturbed adults as well.

They rock back and forth in an unconscious mimicry of the feeling of comfort and security that they experienced before they were born. Children derive comfort from any number of items. Some are commonplace others are peculiar, but two of the most popular toys for children are rocking horses and rocking chairs.

In fact, the desire to sit in a rocking chair or swinging chair never leaves most individuals until their dying day. We seem to get a lot of pleasure from rocking our whole lives long.

Rocking horses and rocking chairs have different functions of course. Rocking horses are for playing on and rocking chairs are for thinking and napping in. A rocking chair is a good idea for a child because it can learn to gain solace for itself by sitting in its rocking chair and feeling contentment without the help of an adult. It helps the child gain an independence, a certain form of maturity.

The only problem with children’s rocking chairs is that children grow up and grow out of them so quickly. If you plan to have a big family this is not a problem, but otherwise you could be left with quite a collection of children’s rocking chairs in the attic.

I say this because although you can sell one before you buy a new one, people find this very difficult to do in practice. They simply can not bear to part with the old one.

You can buy an over-sized child’s rocking chair so that you can get a couple more years use out of it, but in that case it is worth obtaining one with a fixed cushion or sticking some Velcro to the seat and a cushion so that your child does not slide off it.

Rest assured, you will never buy an unwanted or unused present for any child if you buy them a rocking horse, a rocking chair or a cardboard box.

How To Select The Ideal Romantic Gift

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

There are not many things in the world more nerve-racking than attempting to complete all of your Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve. After struggling through the crowds to pick through the sparse leftovers in dozens of shops for the perfect gift, eventually settling on a gift that is “good enough”, and then standing in line for an hour in an attempt to pay for that present even a root canal job may seem preferable; after all, at least they anesthetize for that!

However, because of the busy agenda of people these days, it is becoming increasingly difficult for individuals to get things finished ahead of the Christmas rush. After all, shops have established hours which in general inconveniently coincide with the time that most of the world’s population has to be at work. (More than one individual has suggested that this is not, in fact, a coincidence).

Deliberate or not, it is difficult for many individuals to do their shopping in a bricks-and-mortar store. For this reason, virtual shops are on the increase as people enjoy the ability to do their shopping at any hour of the day or night from the relative comfort of their own homes.

Shopping on the Worldwide web does not, however, get rid of one of the most pressing problems facing Christmas shoppers, that is, deciding what the should buy. For years the jewellery industry has been doing its level best to provide shoppers with an opportunity to select a romantic present for that special individuals in their life, say, a ring, a necklace, a bracelet, a brooch or a tie pin. It seems as if there is always something for everybody in the world of jewellery, regardless of the individual or their personality.

However, giving the same gifts year after year can grow very monotonous and jewelry stores have to constantly fight to stay on top of the market. They are constantly coming up with trendy new products to draw in customers and they have done it again with the advent of silver card pendants.

Silver card pendants are pendants that attach to a card and can be worn as a necklace by the person who received them as a gift. That sounds effortless enough, right? The best thing is that without thought of who you are shopping for, there is a silver card pendant that is fitting for the occasion! Is your wife’s birthday coming up? Buy her a pendant with a romantic heart on it . Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and you have not even begun to think about what you are going to buy your beloved?

Buy her a pendant inscribed with “With All My Love Always” and give it with a card. Is your partner a new mum? Why not get her a pendant that permits her to slip in a photo of your new bundle of happiness and carry him or her with her wherever she goes?

As you can see, no matter what the situation, a silver card pendant makes the ideal gift. They can be bought from almost any online specialty retailer; you only have to do a search.
