Eye Care After Lasik Surgery

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

The patient of Lasik surgery has two main duties regarding his or her eyes: firstly to choose a responsible, skilled surgeon, which should not be too problematic and secondly, to take care of his eyes after the surgical procedure by following the guidance of the surgeon on post-operative care. This second part is very necessary and should not be taken lightly.

The post-operative supervision process is not a problem, but if you are worried about it, you could enquire of your surgeon what it will entail before the operation. The physician or a nurse will be able to explain the procedure of supervision to you in detail or they will give you a pamphlet.

There might be some peculiar sight aberrations for a few days after the operation, some of which are fairly standard. One of the most common aberrations that are standard for a few days are halos around lights.

However, you should be certain that you understand the difference between what is normal and so no grounds for concern and what should be reported instantly

There are different Lasik procedures and the procedures are advancing all the time so it is not possible to give precise details in this article. Moreover, the shape of the eyes and the causes for deteriorating eyesight are individual to each patient.

Some of the advice that your Lasik surgeon might give for your post-operative eye care may include the following, although different doctors might have their own advice.

The first thing is to bear in mind that you have just had an operation including anaesthetic. There may not have been any blood but it was surgery all the same.

All patients are required to take it easy after an operation and you will be no exception. If you had had an operation on your knee, you would use it as little as possible for a time and the same is helpful advice for your eye.

Attempt to sleep for a couple of hours after the operation or at least close your eyes and rest. Infection is the chief concern, so do not poke or rub your eye and do not strain it by trying out your recently improved vision by reading or watching TV.

If you have to entertain yourself in this fashion wear an eye patch. Your surgeon will almost certainly have given you a stiff plastic eye guard, which you ought to wear at all times.

Some surgeons will warn against allowing water into your eye for a couple of days, which means washing just from the neck down, no showering, no going out in the rain and categorically no swimming.

Be wary of dazzling light, it cannot damage your eye but it does hurt. Your world will get much brighter after the surgery and looking at a light bulb can be painful. Be careful of watching moving traffic when the sun is shining, a car window can catch the sun and reflect it back into your eye all of a sudden.

You will be given eye drops so do not fail to use them. Lasik surgery can dry your eyes out, if this happens they might be able to give you alternative or supplemental drops.

How To Use Dairy Products Correctly: Part Two - Cheese

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

The Basic Preparation Food: Dairy Products.

HARD AND SOFT CHEESES

Cheese is made from milk which has been naturally or artificially turned sour. The first method is achieved by standing the milk in a warm place and allowing natural, friendly bacteria to convert the milk’s natural sugars into lactic acid. The latter method is effected by adding an enzyme, usually in to form of rennet.

Colouring and salt are usually added too. The whey is then drained off and the curds are pressed into moulds where they are ripened or cured. Some cheeses are subjected to pressure; soft cheeses are not. Curds are ripened or cured by a variety of means. The method, the quality of the milk and its pasture, the breed of cow, sheep or other animal and the type of bacteria all govern the final product.

Some local conditions are unique and those areas produce cheeses that are not successfully replicated elsewhere: for example Gruyere and Edam, although factories do try. Some even have some success, as most of the world’s Cheddar cheese now comes from the United States and Canada.

The constituents of cheese are typically: 33% fat, 33% protein and 33% water with salt, colouring, sugar etc making up the rest. These percentages vary from region to region as some manufacturers use full-cream milk, others skimmed-milk and yet others add extra cream. Others add some extra sugar, although most do not. All cheeses have a high calcium content and may be considered as ‘concentrated milk’ and stored as such.

Many people say that cheese should not be kept in a fridge and although storing in water, as for milk, is not an option, a cool larder is definitely ideal. Try the traditional method of hanging it up in muslin in a cool, airy place. If the weather is hot, dampen the cheesecloth with water to which a little vinegar has been added.

Cheese is typically served in Europe with a salad or/and bread and is often served after or instead of the sweet course. Hard cheese can be difficult for children to digest and grating it first will make it more palatable to them. Once grated the cheese can be sprinkled on vegetable or fish soups or sauces; added to egg, pasta, rice and oatmeal dishes; put on baked potatoes or pastry; toasted on bread or put in salads and sandwiches.

How To Cook Cheese: A little known fact is that many people find cooked cheese indigestible. The reason lies in its molecular structure. Here is why: cooked starch can be digested by the saliva in the mouth but other foods must pass to the stomach or intestines for this process. They are, however, broken up in the mouth. Digestion of protein begins in the stomach and is completed in the small intestine, while fat is not rendered soluble until it reaches the small intestine.

Cheese possesses a high fat and protein mixture, but in melting, the fat often covers the protein and prevents the digestive juices reaching it in the stomach. Therefore, its digestion is delayed until the fat has been absorbed in the intestines. Cheese can be rendered more digestible by:

1] Combining it with some starchy food, because the starch will absorb the fat, not allowing it to cover the protein.

2] Using seasoning: Cayenne Pepper or mustard will irritate the intestinal lining, causing the release of extra digestive juices.

3] Cooking rapidly at high temperature. This stops the protein from becoming tough and stringy and so, harder to digest or you could add cheese to sauces late in the process.

4] Adding alkali: so, large pinch of Bicarbonate of Soda per 75g (3 ozs) will help neutralize the fatty acids and make the proteins easier to digest.

Blueberries - Are They A Super Fruit?

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

Some people have always contended that some fruits, nuts or vegetables are super foods. This is a contentious subject, but it has to be the case that some foodstuffs are better for you than others, but whether it is reasonable to hype up a foodstuff for a quick sale is another subject. Blueberries are a case in point. Are blueberries a super fruit or not?

Advocates of blueberries say that they are rich in antioxidants and that they are able to improve vision and reduce eye strain; enhance brain and memory functions and combat urinary tract infections (UTI’s). Blueberries are said to be rich in antioxidants and anthocyanins, but what are they?

Well, antioxidants are said to counteract the effects of oxidation and free radicals, which are often associated with the development of cancer and anthocyanins are a kind of flavonoids, which are also an anti-carcinogen.

Blueberries are also in the bottom category of the Glycemic Index. The Glycemic Index employs white bread as the marker against which every foodstuff is measured. Above 70 is thought to be high; between 56 and 59 is medium and below 55 is low. Blueberries, at 53, is at the high end of low. This is not vital knowledge for many people, but it is vital for dieters and diabetics.

Blueberries are thought to improve eyesight because of the anthocyanins, which reinforce the capillaries, which would assist the flow of blood to the eyes, which might help preserve vision. This would improve eye strain or eye tiredness

If this assists preserve vision, it would also delay hair loss, because hair loss is normally associated with a lack of blood/nutrition to the hair follicles which then simply die of starvation, as in male pattern baldness.

Blueberries are a fruit high in flavonoids which are antioxidants as stated above. Some people claim that flavonoids can improve the connections between neurons in the brain, which would probably increase mental capacity.

It may also slow down the degeneration of brain cells and so also the traditionally-perceived degeneration in mental capacity that is associated with old age. If this is a fact, then the consumption of blueberries would also help slow down the progression of lack of motor control: that is, it could help the elderly move more smoothly, less inelegantly.

However, the same people will admit that to make a 5-6% improvement in motor skills would almost certainly take a daily consumption of around 100 grammes per day, which is of course not an inconsequential amount, even if you like them and cultivate them yourself.

It has also been stated that the daily consumption of blueberries reduces the quantity of LDL in the blood, which is popularly called ‘bad cholesterol’.

If you want to test the effects of eating blueberries on yourself, here are a few suggestions on how you can incorporate them into your diet.

Fresh blueberries: eat whilst in season and freeze as much as you can get hold of.

Frozen blueberries: cook in pancakes, muffins and put in home-made ice-cream.

Dried blueberries: eat like raisins as a snack or coat in chocolate.

In this manner, you will be able to resolve the question for yourself : blueberries are they a super fruit?

How To Cook Vegetarian Soup

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Vegetarian soup is a liquid food that is made by boiling vegetables in water and then seasoning and occasionally thickening the liquid that is produced. It is usually served as the first course of a dinner, but it is also often served as a light meal, such as lunch, on its own.

Soup is an easily made, economical and when properly prepared from fresh, nutritious vegetables, very wholesome food.

Care should be taken to produce this food attractive enough to appeal to the appetite, so it ought not to be greasy nor bland in flavour, neither should it be served in large quantities nor without the proper accompaniment.

A small quantity of well-seasoned, attractively presented vegetarian soup cannot fail to find approval when it is served as the first course of a meal. The point of this piece is to acquaint you with the details of cooking appetizing and nutritious vegetarian soup that is both wholesome and healthy.

The three foremost sorts of soup that can be made from wholly vegetarian (yet not necessarily vegan) ingredients are: broths, cream soups (contains dairy produce) and purees. The basis of these three types can be a vegetable stock made from either dried or fresh vegetables or both.

BROTHS have for their base a clear vegetarian stock. They are sometimes a thin soup, yet other times they are prepared fairly thick with vegetables, rice or barley when they are served as a large part of a meal.

CREAM SOUPS are highly nutritious and there are many kinds. They have for their foundation a thin cream sauce, and to this are always added vegetables or grains.

PUREES are soups made thick in part or completely by the addition of some foodstuff obtained from boiling an article of food and then straining it to form a pulp.

When vegetables containing starch such as beans, peas, lentils or potatoes are used for this purpose, it is unnecessary to thicken the soup with any additional starch, but when watery vegetables are used, additional thickening is necessary. To be right, a puree should be nearly as smooth as double cream and of the same texture.

When preparing vegetarian soup always use soft water but be careful to proportion the amount of water to that of the vegetables. A bit less than a quart of water to a pound of vegetables is a decent rule for ordinary soups. Rich soups, intended for company, may have a smaller quantity of water.

Here is a puree type recipe for carrot soup:

CARROT SOUP

4 good-sized carrots, 1 small head of celery, 1 fair-sized onion, 1 turnip, 3 oz. of breadcrumbs, 1-1/2 oz. of butter or margarine, 1 blade of mace, pepper and salt to taste.

Scrape and clean the vegetables; cut them up small; put them in a pan with 3 pints of water, the butter or margarine, breadcrumbs, and mace. Boil until the vegetables are fairly tender; rub everything through a sieve and return the mixture to the saucepan.

Reheat; season with salt and pepper. If it is too thick add water. The soup ought to be as thick as cream; boil and serve with crusty bread.

Dieting For Obese Children

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

It is difficult to see so many children literally overburdening their bodies at such young ages by being overweight. These kids cannot run, jump or play with other children because their bodies just will not permit them to do so. Dieting is a necessity for these kids in spite of our best efforts to protect them from the self-esteem problems that often go together with obesity.

If you have a child that is well outside the normal weight range for his or her age, you are the one who must take the necessary steps to make certain that they shed those excess pounds in order to live a life that is as close to normal as possible. The first thing you have to do however is consult your child’s physician about the best possible course of action to look after the health of your child.

Put quite bluntly however, if you do not make the effort to assist your child to shed those pounds you are placing the health of your child at risk. We do not let our kids play in the street, we do not let them run around with guns, why on Earth would we permit them to commit suicide by chocolate? If you have a child that is overweight, the following advice should help you and them with their dieting.

First of all, do not make food a penalty or a prize. Food is part of the difficulty with your children and you should not use it against them. Instead, introduce them to healthy alternatives. Do not keep junk food in the house and do not let them purchase lunch at school. Pack their lunches for school so that you know what they are eating. If you do not give them junk food to take away and they cannot have it when at home, they will be better off.

Include healthy snacks into your family’s eating routine rather than junk food. Fresh fruit, chopped vegetables, nuts, and frozen yogurt are good healthy snacks for your kids. When in doubt, consult the food pyramid but watch calories in the process. You want your kids to eat a well balanced diet and eliminate junk food and sweets.

Cut out the juices and pop. This may be a huge problem in your house but the best gift you can offer your child is a deep and long-lasting appreciation of water. Water works to make their stomachs feel full and keeps them hydrated for the added exercises you should be introducing into their lives.

Have them take dance lessons, take up a sport, or simply get out and run around the yard. The worst thing you can do is to allow your children to become comatose television, computer, or video game zombies. Get them out of the house and get them active. This helps in two ways. First of all, they are not eating if they are outside playing and having a good time. Second, they are burning calories as they play which is a big bonus in the dieting process of your children.

As your child begins to lose weight, you should start to notice a very big change in not only the way he or she bears his or herself but also in his or her relations with others. Your child will notice a restored self-confidence as the pounds come off and the teasing at school stops.

If you are at a complete loss as to how to help your child take the weight off there are camps that are intended expressly to deal with weight problems and building self-esteem in children ages 7-19. A camp may be just the answer you are looking for. Another thing to consider is to lead by example. If you do not eat junk food, if you are active, and if you do not engage in emotional over-eating your child will not be learning those behaviours from you or having them strengthened by you.

What Is The The Atkins Diet?

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

The short name for the ‘Atkins Nutritional Approach’ is the ‘Atkins Diet’, which was the brainchild of Doctor Robert Atkins. Dr. Atkins had gained a lot of surplus weight while he was studying in medical school and after reading about a new diet in a medical journal, he made up his mind to refine it and publish it as his own.

Atkins, in his Atkins Diet book, wrote that he believed that the prevailing theories about putting on weight were completely wrong. First, he dismissed the idea that saturated fats were bad; instead he said it was it was carbohydrates that led to the weight problems Americans have these days. Atkins declared that our obsession with avoiding fat actually aggravated the problem. He pointed out that the low-fat foods that were high in carbohydrates were not helping the nation, which probably meant that people on a diet often ate foods that were worse for them than what they had normally eaten.

The Atkins diet shifted the focus. Atkins said that by cutting out carbohydrates, people would burn their stored body fats. And, of course, if you lose the fat, you lose the weight. He said it was not only a question of eating less. Atkins held that a diet could actually help you burn calories and that The Atkins Diet supposedly burned more calories than were being consumed everyday. But the claims were disputed.

Dr. Atkins also promulgated the positive influence that his diet should have on people with Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a disease you usually get early in life, but Type 2 is more often closely associated with diet and surplus body weight. Therefore, it should follow that any diet that helps reduce weight, will help people with Type 2 diabetes. The Atkins diet is low in carbohydrates, which must be avoided by those with Type 2 diabetes regardless of the caloric intake, which the Atkins diet does, so Atkins claimed that those who suffer Type 2 diabetes would no longer need medication such as insulin. Doctors do not agree with Atkins on this point, although they do agree, that a lower carbohydrate intake helps control Type 2 diabetes, but there is no proof that carbohydrates cause diabetes.

What does one have to do to follow the Atkins diet? Well, it goes in four phases - Induction; On-Going Weight loss; Pre-maintenance; and Lifetime Maintenance. This is a brief synopsis of the first phase - The Induction Phase.

The Induction phase is probably the most difficult of the phases in the Atkins diet. Atkins is rather flexible about how long it should last ” but recommends two weeks. During this time, carbohydrate consumption should be severely curtailed ” up to 20 grammes per day. The goal is to enter a fat burning metabolic process called ‘ketosis’ which is when the body, being starved of glucose, begins to convert previously stored fat into the fatty acids needed to run the body. Weight loss during this period can be large ” some Atkins dieters report losses of 5-10 lbs. a week or more.

The goals of the three final phases in the Atkins diet are the learning of the ideal carbohydrate levels for the next two phases: continued weight loss and weight maintenance. Millions of people are still losing the weight they want to on this diet ” but be aware of the dangers of taking in too much cholesterol.

Do you want to lose those excess kilos rapidly? Well, take a free look at The Atkins Diet, by visiting our website called The Atkins Diet Plan
