Preventing Accounting Scandals

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Very strong growth (22%) in the number of accountants and auditor jobs (279,400 new jobs) is expected from 2008-2018. Within that group, CPAs should have the best prospects for employment with an expected growth rate faster than that for accountants.

This is expected because of financial scandals, investors will be demanding increased accountability for protecting an organization’s stakeholders. The need for these “accounting watchdogs” will spur job growth in the accounting sector.

Opportunities for forensic accountants who are CPAs support the work of attorneys in family law, bankruptcy and business law are increasing.

For example, the high profile divorce of Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills included a dispute over how much Sir Paul, the former Beatle, was actually worth. He claimed he was worth around USD $785 million while she thought he was worth around $1.6 billion. Enter her team of forensic accountants who delved into the situation. As of June 2008, the accountants had not found any evidence which compelled the judge to award Ms. Mills more moola than her initial divorce settlement.

Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance While accounting will be a very fast growing sector at 22% from 2008-2018, the growth in jobs for CPAs is expected to be the sector’s fastest growing niche. Prior to 2002, a multitude of corporate accounting scandals (e.g., Enron, Tyco International, Adelphia, Peregrine Systems and WorldCom) cost investors billions of dollars.

When the Sarbanes-Oxley Act passed in 2002, a new layer of accounting oversight was created to thwart the tide of corporate financial malfeasance.

The act established new or enhanced standards for all US public company boards, management, and for public accounting firms. By creating a new public agency, the act created a number of jobs for accounting overseers, regulators, and inspectors.

Further, the Securites and Exchange Commission (SEC) implemented the adoption of dozens of new rules to comply with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

Public Company Accounting Oversight Board While accounting will be a very fast growing sector at 22% from 2008-2018, the growth in jobs for CPAs is expected to be the sector’s fastest growing niche. Passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act created the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). PCAOB will expand to hire more accountants and CPAs to provide independent oversight of public accounting firms which audit their corporate clients.

The central oversight board will register auditors as well as setting up the procedural framework for compliance audits, inspections and policing conduct and quality control, and enforcing compliance with specific elements of Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX Act).

Very strong growth (22%) is forecasted in the number of accounting jobs expected from 2008-2018. Within that group, CPAs have an expected growth rate faster than that for accountants; a growing niche is enforcing new laws which deal with financial compliance. Congress has never been at a loss for words…or legislation.

As more corporations cross the legal boundaries, more laws will be written to keep others from erring. Legislation, in this case, is like nail the barn door shut after the horse got out: yes, it keeps the others inside but you have to capture the one that got out!

Changes in laws regarding taxes, financial reporting standards, business investments, mergers and other financial matters will lead to an increased need for CPAs, accountants and auditors to police the situation.

Forensic Accounting in Criminal Justice Very strong growth (22%) is forecasted in the number of accounting jobs expected from 2008-2018. Within that group, CPAs have an expected growth rate faster than that for accountants; a growing niche is forensic accounting.

Forensic accountants who detect illegal financial activity will be more in demand as the number of financial crimes increases.

Crimes such as embezzlement, bribery, and securities fraud by individuals, by corporations, and by organized crime networks are increasing. Computer technology has made these crimes even easier to commit and even harder to uncover.

But the “good guys” have weapons as well: the development of new computer software and advanced electronic surveillance technology make detecting financial crimes easier, thereby increasing the likelihood of discovery, investigation, prosecution and conviction.

Economic Expansion Very strong growth (22%) is forecasted in the number of accountants and auditor jobs (279,400 new jobs) expected from 2008-2018. Within that group, CPAs should have the best prospects for employment with an expected growth rate faster than that for accountants.

This is expected because: IF the economy expands, the number of businesses will increase. New jobs will be created in accounting to set up the books, prepare taxes, and provide management advice. As these new businesses grow, the quantity and complexity of financial information reviewed by accountants and auditors on the costs, expenditures, taxes and corporate internal controls will increase as well.

As the globalization of business accelerates, there will be an increased demand for accounting expertise and services regarding international trade and accounting rules as well as international mergers and acquisitions.

While accounting will be a very fast growing sector at 22% from 2008-2018, the growth in jobs for CPAs is expected to be the sector’s fastest growing niche. Because the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Act prohibits auditing companies from providing services such as consulting and management advice to their clients, it is expected that there will be job growth in accounting companies which provide consulting and other non-auditing advice to their clients.

Since the Sarbanes-Oxley Act requires that senior executives of a company (such as the Chief Executive Officer and the Chief Financial Officer) take individual responsibility for the completeness and accuracy of the corporate financial reports, it is likely that those who rise to C-level will have to have more familiarity with accounting than a manager’s passing glance. This opens a career path for accountants/ CPAs into the CEO chair as well as the CFO chair.

(Since the CEO is asked to sign the company’s tax return, this is all the more reason for the person to be a CPA as well as a manager.)

As the success rates of the “good guys” rise, the demand for forensic accountants will rise as well.

Reenacted Moves In Wrestling

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Wrestling moves are tricky, since if you are not paying close attention, you could believe that the acts are real. At the moment, I am still a little reluctant to fill you in on the throws, since I am not a wrestling fan, however my son is, and he is going to give us the inside information on wrestling moves to help us see it for what it is, fake.

One of the oldest moves is the ‘banana splits’, although, today, the move is now known as the ‘leg splits’. This move entails one wrestler putting both hands on the legs of the other wrestler and pushing the legs apart as far as they will go. This move will force the wrestler to put his/her own shoulders to the mat. If the wrestling move were for real and the wrestler failed to submit, his/her legs would split some muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc.

The ‘Cobra Clutch’ is another of the holds that would in reality cause agony. The cobra move is universally recognizable as the cross chokes or arm locks. The challenging wrestler will come from the back of the other pugilist and using a single arm in the “Nelson Hold”. The opponent will then use his/her arm to tug the wrestler’s arm trying to prevent him from pulling across the neckline and choking him as a result. The back clutch, or bombard is similar but the challenging wrestler is on his back under his opponent extending his arms upward from behind.

The ‘Rock Bottom’ move involves the adversary drawing his opponents arm over his shoulder. The wrestler then pulls the opponents arm over his/her shoulder and lifts and dives forward onto the mat. During this attack, the challenger is hitting the mat head first, which if actually done, would break bones or at least result in some serious pain.

The ‘Choke Slam’ involves the attacking wrestler gripping the opponent’s arm and lifting his arm close by his opponent’s side, over his shoulder. Then he lifts the opponent and slams him to the mat.

The ‘Big Boot’ is a running move. The wrestler kicks up his boot, connecting with the face of his opponent. So, a boot in the face, in other words! This would definitely put a person on his/her backside any time, causing the kicked person to feel severe giddiness for a while.

What makes wrestling so exciting is the phoney dialogue, the outfits, the characters and the moves. If you think of the Superman films, and how he dresses, you will notice that without his costume he wouldn’t have any character appeal as Superman. Likewise, the wrestlers wear costumes that make them appear as though they are super heroes of the ring, indicting the baddies. Each wrestler has his/her role in the ring. It is usually quite placid, but made to look violent!

Wrestling has rules, as well as restrictions, even though the moves are all phoney. Wrestlers must respect the perimeters of the ring, as well as the colour codes in the ring. There are also methods of wrestling, which include the folk style, freestyle and Greco Romanian styles.

The styles have their own set of rules, however freestyle and folk style are similar. Usually, the styles are enacted so well that you wouldn’t know if the wrestlers are using the freestyle, folk style, or Greco style.

As with a script or a dance routine, most of the moves are composed, which means that a director is off camera using his/her hands to direct the wrestlers in the rings. For the most part, wrestling is nothing more than an act with a few exemptions like when the KAYFABE is broken, when a real fight might break out. The KAYFABE is wrestling’s verbal communication.

Do you have an interest in wrestling? If you need to learn more about the moves, the stars and the show, visit our website and catch up on wrestling revealed.

Among the documents that you may have to produce are accomplishment test scores, a home school course approved by the state and a professional evaluation of your child’s educational development.

You will also need teaching qualifications for you and your spouse, if you are both to be the teachers of your children, while they are occupied in home schooling. Some states may demand that state officials visit your home to check whether the children are indeed in receipt of an adequate high school education from you. These are just a few of the diverse documents and pertinent facts that you will need to be aware of concerning your state’s home schooling laws.

Financial Aid for College Scholarships and Grants

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Education is becoming more and more expensive as time goes by. Because of this, a great number of students are applying for scholarships and grants in the form of financial aid for college to supplement their wherewithal while in school.

Luckily, there are already several methods to obtain financial aid for college scholarships to assist these students with their financial needs. The main providers of financial aid for college are the government, individuals, non-profit organizations and private organizations.

However, not everyone is familiar with the ways of accessing the information they need when applying for this financial aid for college scholarships. Basically, listed below are the possible methods you can employ to find the ways of applying for financial aid for college scholarship:

Firstly, you can do a college scholarship search in the search engines like Google or Yahoo: just type in “college scholarships and grants” (without the inverted commas). Visit the free sites that link to financial aid for college scholarships search websites and databases. This tool is convenient for most people compared with other resources since most people probably already have a computer at home.

You just have to match your profile to any number of financial aid for college scholarships where you think you qualify. Another advantage of using the financial aid for college scholarship search engines is that it is always up-to-date. Hence, you have access to the latest grants and financial aid for college free on the Internet.

You can also reference other resources. You can enquire at the local community and civic organizations, as well as in police departments and fire departments in your locality. They might be offering financial aid for college scholarships too.

Also, the majority of the state government departments extend financial assistance to in-state students. So, you can take advantage of local assets. Most often, the best financial aid for college scholarships is extended to students who excel in the fields of writing, science, math, music, sports and the like.

These types of financial aid for college scholarships and grants do not normally require very high grades: a GPA of 2.0 will often suffice. They are usually based rather on the students character, circumstances and his or her explanation of why the student thinks he / she is eligible for the financial aid for a college scholarship or grant.

However, do not expect that you will get the full scholarship money simply by placing your name in only one or two particular programs. Keep in mind, that applying for financial aid for college scholarship or grants is a numbers game. So, it is best for you to apply for more rather than less scholarships and grants to be assured that you will be successful in one or more of them.

After finding your prospective scholarships in either of the above mentioned resources, you should find out the process for college application next. The following are the ways to ensure your success in getting a college scholarship:

Start your search early. The majority of the scholarships are open for a finite period of time only. If you start your search early, you will not just be able to find the best scholarships, but you will also be able to apply for more financial aid for college scholarships, which will afford you even more chance of winning at least one of them.

Remember to be very diligent when you are reading the requirements for that scholarship or grant. Be aware that, of the large number of scholarship applicants, only a few will suit the the sponsor’s stipulations. So, read the required qualifications with care and only go for those scholarships that you are suited for. If a financial aid for college scholarships or grant does not suit your qualifications, do not even bother with it, try looking for a different one.

Make sure you fulfill all the necessary requirements. When you make your application form for the financial aid for college scholarships, you definitely must already have to hand all the documents required (eg birth certificate, driving licence, school records or whatever). It is not advisable for you to wait for your prospective sponsor to ask you for proof of something before you have it to hand. Most of all, submit your application for financial aid for college scholarships early, and work on the assumption that you will be considered as one of the sponsor’s scholars.

Thought on Home Schooling.

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Home schooling or homeschooling, if you want (in fact, you even see it hyphenated, as in home-schooling) has been around for about 30 years now, although, of course it was all pupils had before state intervention in education. Out of the way thinly-populated areas in huge countries like the USA, Canada and Australia still have to rely on home schooling to a great extent, although it is less difficult now with the popularization of radio, television and the Internet. Video cassettes also have an important role, as do books still.

Nevertheless, home schooling has become very popular in the cities as an alternative to urban public schools, which are often seen as hotbeds of disruption, anger and narcotics, especially by the middle classes and not without some due cause, to be honest. However, there are also other valid reasons for opting for home schooling, which we will go into later.

Firstly, it must be said that the decision to opt for home schooling must be a family one. This is because it will turn “normal family life” on its head and place an added monetary strain on the household purse. For instance, one parent will have to stop work. This cannot be allowed to be a source of bad feeling, or both parents could take part-time employment and share the children’s tuition time. Whichever way you go, you will not have two full-time incomes any longer. Working from home on the Internet could be a partial solution here.

Home schooling will also upset everyone’s social life. So, the parents’ social life is restricted by not meeting work colleagues every day, but so is little Johnny’s, particularly if he has already spent some time in a normal classroom. He won’t see his friends from class as much and they may drift away from him or even resent him.

On the positive side is that the family will become a lot more solid as a unit by studying together at home schooling. Both parents will have a thorough knowledge of what their child is learning and will be learning. While maintaining a broad-based education, you might nonetheless opt to focus on aspects of, say, history or science, that especially interest your child. It gives you the freedom to tailor your child’s education to his or her own interests, something that state education cannot do well with over-sized classes. Your child will also come less under the influence of the rowdier pupils in school and be able to concentrate more on studying.

A note of caution may be useful at this point. Do not be tempted to compel your child to learn too rapidly. It is tempting for a non-professional teacher-cum-proud parent in home schooling to push the child much harder than he can go. Remember that most people are only average. You must be on look out for signs of burn-out and bad feeling at all times.

Once you decide to opt for home schooling, you will have to choose a basic curriculum, run through it yourself to familiarize yourself with it, buy or locate in the library any supplementary books, videos and software, make a load of notes and stock up on pens and paper, folders, binders and filing cabinets and you’ll be ready for your first semester at home schooling.

How Do You Get Scholarship Grants Or Financial Aid?

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Just what is the real cost of a college education and is there a financing scheme available? Well, lets face reality - a college education is really very expensive, causing many parents alarm when their children are considering attending a community college or a state university.

There are a lot of things which make up the total cost of a college education and the tuition fee is just a part of the big picture of getting into college. Other everyday expenditures include food, transport, housing, pocket money and other miscellaneous costs, which, when added up can create a significant part when financing a college education.

Nowadays, many families, even those belonging to the upper class, consider applying for financial aid. College grants and scholarships are a very good kind of financial aid. Grant and scholarship programmes do not require the students or even their families to repay the amount given.

Scholarships and grants are of two basic kinds: (i) scholarships awarded according to financial need, depending on the financial inability of the student and their families to pay for the college education, and (ii) scholarships based on merit, for example the talent of the student in tennis is the main consideration. A students academic prowess falls under the merit-based college grant and scholarship system as well.

Often, college grants and scholarships combine the merit and need criteria to make the whole financial aid process easier. Numerous students and their families are on the look-out for this type of financial aid. However, college grants and scholarships are quite limited in number despite the fact that there is a growing number of students year after year.

Those students who qualify can get federal and a number of state scholarships, some of which are listed below:

Federal or National Pell Grants ” this is a program, which is available nationwide and which is intended to provide financial assistance to any qualified undergraduate student pursuing post-secondary schooling. Grants and scholarships of this kind are awarded to those who have not yet completed a baccalaureate degree.

The value of the grant varies every year and will depend a lot on the financial requirements of the student, the expenses that will be incurred whilst attending the chosen university or college, and the availability of funding from the national government. This kind of grant will create an opportunity for students to succeed in securing financial aid from the national government.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) ” this is a programme for continuing undergraduate students with exceptional monetary needs. However, not all students can get this sort of grant. It will depend on the eligibility of the student and the amount of funds in the school concerned.

Another sort of financial assistance that students and families can turn to is student loans. However, this type of financial assistance must be paid back. The financial needs of the family should be considered thoroughly to avoid paying very high interest rates.

It is also a must to learn all the terms of the lending agency such as the schedule of repayment and interest rates, before signing up.

Work study is another form of financial assistance which calls for students to work to keep themselves during their college education. Work study is commonly carried out on campus and is the most typical form of financial aid in all of the universities and colleges in the USA. Usually, the students will work for schools for ten to fifteen hours per week.

Scholarships, grants and other sorts of financial aid to acquire a college education is really multi-faceted, confusing at times, and even down-right exasperating.
