The Social Vegetarian

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Lifestyle changes are the hardest ones to make and one of the biggest lifestyle alterations that anyone can attempt voluntarily is to become a vegetarian. Often individuals find it more comfortable to become part of a support group whilst making lifestyle alterations; think of Alcoholics Anonymous, Weight Watchers or giving up smoking. Joining a support group can help the beginner vegetarian too.

The advantages of being a member of such a support group are many, but some of them are encouragement, advice and friendship. You may not need the friendship, but you might like to socialize with other vegetarians so that you can see how they deal with eating out and basically simply mixing into a society designed by and for meat-eaters.

However, whether you propose giving up your old friends or not, you may find yourself gravitating away from them after a while quite naturally. Remember the old expression: ‘Birds of a feather flock together’? This is fairly standard.

You will have concerns substituting something else for meat; you will become worried that your diet is deficient in some nutrient; you will start wondering which restaurants serve truly vegetarian food and plenty more.

Your newly found support group friends will be a immense source of encouragement and advice in this sphere. You may not like the notion of a ‘vegetarian support group’, yet you could just as easily join a vegetarian dining club or vegetarian cookery class, the effect will work out the same - you will learn and you will make new acquaintances.

If you have difficulty locating such a group by the normal methods of your local Yellow Pages and an Internet search, try going to the local community centre, where there may be yoga classes - a few of the attendees will be vegetarians that you can ask. Or go to you local health food shop and ask there Likewise you could ask at a martial arts club or a Hindu Indian restaurant. If all else fails, you could begin your own club.

If you organize your own club, find a supportive bar or restaurant that will cook your meal suggestions for that night at a reasonable price. After a time, I am certain you could build up a nice little club of twenty individuals and the landlord may let you have your own room to dine in once a month like the Masons.

If you think that this is too much in the early days, you could just set up a blog. A blog is an interactive web site, where you and others can post relevant knowledge. If you keep the name of the blog relevant to your town and vegetarianism, you ought to find that other people searching as you once did will find you, whereas you discovered no one. Once you have built up a group of local, on line vegetarian sympathizers, you could suggest meeting once a month in the flesh and take the dining notion from there. An ad in the local paper would help too.

Inexpensive Fitness Options

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

When people think of home gyms, they think of expensive machines and lots of money spent on gym equipment. But when you’re first starting out, it’s better to start with a few simple and small items that are cheap or sometimes free. When you are first starting out, focusing on fitness instead of massive muscle gain is key, so starting with smaller pieces of equipment is best.

One extremely versatile and inexpensive home fitness equipment item would be a resistance band. It will be helpful to get a few resistance bands of different elasticities, but just having one is a good start. They can be used in so many different ways. Using the band you can re-create exercises performed using machines or dumbbells. They take up practically zero space, which is helpful for someone living in an apartment or cramped living quarters.

If you, like many others, already have cable television, you may have means that your disposal that you’re unaware of. Most cable providers have many fitness dedicated channels that can help you exercise more. You may also have free on demand services that’ll often have dozens of different workouts available at the push of a button. Now, if you don’t have cable, you can find videos on the Internet at sites like YouTube or even from your local library.

Do you have a video game system such as Playstation 3, Wii or Xbox 360? If so, then you have a fitness machine at your disposal. Each of these systems have a good number of fitness themed games. Some will require additional equipment which may or may not be included. My favorite are the EA Active series of games for the Wii. It includes a harness for your thigh with an attachment for the controller so that it can measure how well you are doing your exercises. But Xbox 360’s Kinect attachment, the game has changed. It can monitor your entire body’s movements and help your improve your form.

If you don’t want to buy weights, come up with alternatives that can help you build muscles. A popular alternative are detergents bottles. After you have done your laundry and used up the detergent, save the bottle. The built in handle is a great grip and the weight can be altered by adding or removing water to find the perfect weight for each workout.

While massive muscle growth does require machines and heavy weights, toning your body and improving your fitness doesn’t require quite as much. By just simply jogging in place or performing jumping jacks you are performing a cardio exercise. But it comes down to is if you are moving your burning calories. And just because you’re not lifting weights does not mean your body isn’t building muscle. Down the line you may want to upgrade to a gym machine, but for getting started the items above are ideal.

The Vegetarian Life Then And Now

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

There was a time, say thirty or forty years ago, when vegetarians had a difficult time telling non-vegetarians why it was so imperative to give up meat. The situation was made worse because vegetarians back then did not get the support from the food manufacturers and supermarkets that they do now either. In brief, it was far more difficult to become a vegetarian than it is now.

Moreover, in those far off days, lots of hippies and others following an ‘alternative’ lifestyle were first generation vegetarians and so they could not look to their parents for support and advice. Those individuals are now in their forties and fifties with children and even grandchildren of their own, many of whom are also vegetarian.

Being second or even third generation vegetarian is very different from being first, not least because they have been able to see the effects of a vegetarian lifestyle on their parents and even grandparents. It may never cross such a person’s mind to crave a bacon sandwich with tomato sauce or a French dip beef sandwich au jus, because the idea is repugnant to them.

They have not had to make a conscious decision or a huge physical effort to strip meat from their diet after perhaps eating it for twenty years or more. My father gave up meat for ethical as well as practical reasons when he was sixty and he craved ‘bacon butties’ (sandwiches) for the rest of his life. He found it hard.

His reasons for giving up meat were pretty typical: he objected to the callousness to animals that is brought about by intensive farming techniques in some countries; he objected to the use of hormones and preservatives in live animals and he believed that eating so much meat was not a sustainable lifestyle for a burgeoning world populace, that was becoming steadily rich enough that everybody would would like to eat more meat sooner or later.

Society does not help or encourage the would-be vegetarian. The farming industry has grown huge and they have a vested interest in selling us their dairy, meat and eggs. It is hard to escape pictures and hoardings marketing their products. Although the situation is better these days, restaurants still cater usually to the meat-eaters and vegetarian meals always appear small and expensive by comparison.

Luckily there are plenty of ‘Eastern’ restaurants that cater naturally to the vegetarian because numerous Easterners are vegetarian. You can always find vegetarian meals on a Chinese, Japanese or an Indian menu. Hindus are vegetarian. Thai restaurants will also have a high proportion of meatless meals.

However, if you do not enjoy spicy food, you are back in the pizza hut or the sandwich bar in most towns. Society has moved on, but there is still a long way to go but the vegetarian life is definitely becoming easier to sustain. There is support in numbers, so it would be worth taking vegetarian cookery lessons if your resolve begins to weaken.

Some Facts About The Constituents Of Food

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

It is very handy to know something concerning the most common constituents of foodstuffs, so that you can use this knowledge to your advantage while choosing and cooking food. The more you know about the constituents of food the better able you will be to choose the best method of preparing that food. In this piece we will talk about some constituents of food.

Carbohydrates are a concentrated form of energy as is fat. However, the two substances differ in several ways, not least in that fat supplies energy in a very concentrated kind whereas carbohydrates provide energy in a more economical way. Over indulging in either fats or carbohydrates will result in becoming overweight quite quickly.

Therefore, this is the region that dieters must concentrate on, although ‘experts’ disagree which is the most detrimental. Traditional diets recommend cutting back on fats, whereas some more modern diets recommend practically eliminating carbohydrates from one’s diet.

The fact is that the body and most of the food that we put into it is made up of chemical elements, the most important of which are nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Protein is the only thing that we eat that contains nitrogen, which goes a long way to explain why protein is essential to us.

Protein is also the hardest substance to find in the vegetarian diet. It is not impossible by any means, but the options are severely restricted because most individuals get their protein from meat, fish, dairy and eggs.

The other three elements: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen are constituents of carbohydrates. In fact, the very word ‘carbohydrate’ suggests the names of those three elements. ‘Carbo’ - carbon and ‘hydrate’ - hydrogen and oxygen, as in water. Carbohydrates are most extant in starches and sugars.

Starch is one of the most omnipresent kinds of carbohydrate. It is to be found exclusively in vegetables and pulses et cetera. While starch is boiled, it expands and bursts its cell walls causing water to thicken yet when it is cooked with dry heat, it melts and turns into dextrine, which is a stage before it turns into sugar.

Sugar is another vital constituent of carbohydrates and is also discovered usually in vegetables and fruit, although there is also some in milk in the form or lactose. Corn produces glucose. Young vegetables contain sugar, but as they become older it becomes starch.

Sugar melts with the application of heat, but if it is already in liquid form, it will give off water and start to caramelize. The distinctive colour or caramel is brown, yet if it is over cooked, it becomes dark brown and bitter. Sugar in fruit and vegetables will leak out into boiling water and so will be lost, unless that water is salvaged and used elsewhere.

Cellulose is a kind of carbohydrate closely related to starch. It is found in the structure of plants and vegetables but although it is largely indigestible, it cannot be left out of the human diet. Cellulose surrounds the goodness we are searching for in vegetables, so by cooking this food we are trying to break down the cellulose to release the goodness.

Young vegetables have thinner cellulose than older ones, which is why some vegetables have to be cooked quickly and fiercely whilst others have to be cooked slowly but gently.

Some Basics About Cholesterol And Triglycerides

Friday, July 1st, 2011

Cholesterol has a bad press to be certain, but this is because the press does not normally give the full story. It is easier and scarier to leave a few bits out. The fact is that we have to have cholesterol and triglycerides for that matter in order to function properly. The point where these fats are a problem is when we have too high a percentage of them in our blood.

This is a comparable situation to having a lot of sugar in the blood on a regular basis, which is otherwise called diabetes. A different word for this is hyperglycaemia and hyperglycaemia can be a cause of having too many triglycerides in the blood as well, which by the way is known as hypertriglyceridemia. ‘Hyper’ meaning ‘too much’.

Cholesterol and triglycerides are the two main fats in our blood system. Cholesterol and triglycerides come from the foodstuffs that we consume, but our own bodies create them too. Cholesterol is crucial for several basic bodily functions like regulating hormones and making bile.

Having said that, there are two types of cholesterol: low and high density cholesterol. The low end can go very low and the lower it goes the worse it is for you. This is a very complicated issue which is better explained in a longer piece, but all you have to keep in mind is that low density or LDL is bad and high density cholesterol is ‘good’.

This is a very simplistic explanation, but it is the one that we are told of in the tabloid press. HDL cholesterol is believed to help mop up LDL cholesterol, which is why it is called good.

If this natural process does not take place or goes out of balance, the LDL cholesterol waxy fat will stick to the walls of arteries making them thinner, narrower. This is known as atherosclerosis (furring of the arteries) and means that the heart has to pump blood harder in order to get oxygen to every part of the body.

This is known as hypertension or high blood pressure and puts the heart at risk of stress and failure - coronary heart disease and stroke are the possible consequences of furred arteries.

There is a great deal that you can do to adjust any issues with your cholesterol levels. Most of our cholesterol comes from eating red meat and full-fat dairy products, so merely by replacing every other steak with a salad could greatly reduce your difficulty. There are other methods of doing this too, like exercise.

Exercise is a useful way of burning up the surplus fats in your blood stream, but it has to be carried out on a daily basis. Not that it takes a lot. If you think about what you consume and reduce the foodstuffs heavy in cholesterol, you might merely need 30 minutes moderate exercise a day in order to be healthy.

The fact is that if you do not do something about your state of affairs, you will be placed on tablets for the rest of your life. You might think that this is a good alternative to diet and exercise, but it is not actually. It is just the easy option.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on a lot of topics, but is now involved with the question: what is a triglyceride?. If you want to know more, just visit our web site at What Foods Lower Cholesterol?

How To Reduce Cholesterol Without Statins

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Most people think that cholesterol worries just have an effect on older individuals, but this is not true. High degrees of cholesterol can also be discovered in the young. In one study, 75 % of those checked had a yellow waxy substance in their blood - LDL cholesterol - it is thought to be a reliable indication of future heart problems. The astonishing thing concerning this study was that they were all fit American soldiers with an average age of only 21.

Now we do need some LDL cholesterol because it is used by the body to control some important functions and we definitely need HDL cholesterol because it assists regulate LDL cholesterol. The only issue is the volume of these substances. High levels of LDL have been linked to atherosclerosis, which leads to heart disease.

If you want to begin working on your cholesterol levels in a maintenance sort of way, you can do so with the aid of exercise and diet. The exercise element does not have to be arduous. Strolling for an hour a day will do the trick if it is in conjunction with healthy dieting.

The diet should include plenty of fibre and roughage because not only will it reduce LDL cholesterol, but it will also help your bowels to work properly which lowers your chance of getting bowel cancer, the incidence of which is rising these days.

Foods that are rich in fibre and roughage are fruit and vegetables, especially greens; beans, pulses and grains, particularly oats as in porridge; nuts and soya. It is fairly simple to increase your consumption of these foods without drastically changing you main diet, although it is wise to substitute skinless chicken and fish for beef and pork.

For example, you could eat porridge for breakfast and add a handful of barley to your soup. You could add a few leaves of lettuce to your sandwich and eat fruit as snacks throughout the day. You could have beans on toast every now and again. Whole grain bread, obviously.

Some foods have a particularly good reputation for reducing cholesterol levels. Avocado is one because it contains a lot of mono-unsaturated fats which raise the degree of HDL and HDL counteracts LDL. Raw carrots are another one. Raw carrots contain plenty of pectin, which reduces LDL. Pectin is also there in substantial quantities in citrus fruits, apples and berries such as strawberries, raspberries and red and black berries.

Then there are other famously healthy foodstuffs like garlic and shitake mushrooms which are also considered to ward off cancer and boost the immune system as a whole. Ginger is another healthy food that is easily incorporated into dishes.

Nuts, especially walnuts, hazelnuts, pecans and almonds are high in Omega 3 fatty acids which has a beneficial impact on LDL cholesterol. Sesame seeds contain phytosterols, which also lowers LDL. Other foods containing phytosterols are: celery, lettuce, asparagus, spinach and tomatoes.

You should strive to consume mono- and poly-unsaturated fats as they will boost your HDL. You can find these fats in cannola, safflower, soya bean and olive oil. They also hold Omega 3. Other sources of Omega 3 are fish, particularly the fatty fish like tuna, salmon and mackerel.

Coping With The Stress Of An Online Home Business

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Are you thinking of making some extra capital on the internet? You certainly would not be the only one. Millions of individuals are turning to the Internet to discover ways of making an extra income from the comfort of their own homes and some are even hoping to be able to give up their day jobs and work online full-time.

There is no place like the Internet. No country can offer the same entry to a global market for such little cost as the Internet. Being online, can cost less than a dollar an hour and for that dollar you can have access to hundreds of millions of people through their computers.. That is access to several tens of millions of people per cent of outlay.

That makes an Internet-based business the most cost-effective in the world and it permits you to work from a laptop or cyber cafe anywhere in the world. The one thing that working online cannot do for you though is stop the stress that builds up from owning any business. Therefore, how can you reduce the stresses of running an online business? I do not mean financial stress or delivery problems, they are common to all business set-ups.

Changes take place very rapidly on the Internet. A new style or method of doing things can take place within a week or even less, whereas it may take months or even years in a land-based company. This means that you have to devote some time every week to keeping up with ‘current affairs’.

The easiest way of doing this is to subscribe to a few forums. Join say two forums that are relevant to the industry that you are in and one general ‘techie’ forum. That way, you will always be aware of the latest developments and cannot be caught sleeping.

The Internet can be pretty flimsy, when you think about it. You might spend years building a couple of hundred websites, but if you host goes down, so do you, unless you are ready. In 2009, that happened to me twice, so it is not that uncommon. It is very easy for someone to set himself up as a web space reseller, but if he stops paying his bills, he can take hundreds of website owners off line with him and you may not even know it for a few days.

There are several precautions that you should take to dispel the stress of going out of online business over night through no fault of your own.

Take regular, very regular backups and do not put all your backups on the same medium. I backup everything every time I modify anything. One day the backup goes to a CD and the next day it goes to a portable hard drive. If I had a large enough flash drive the third day would go there. That way, you can never lose more than two day’s work, and believe me, that is sickening enough.

Sign all your websites up to a ‘pinging’ service. These services check to see whether your web site is on or off line several times a day robotically and tell you if they are down. You can get this free, but otherwise it costs just pennies per site per month.

Have a second host ready. You can get a year’s hosting for a $60 or a few dollars a month. Have your account open and ready and you could even load your websites on to it, so that if disaster strikes, you only have to modify the name servers and you are off again.

Weight Loss And Bowling

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Bowling is a sport that can get quite emotional and because of that, it can also be used to relieve stress and tension. It is a good way to let off steam for people who lead a stressful life and have a high pressured job. Apart from these benefits, bowling can be a useful element in your weight loss program.

After all, you get to move a lot of your body muscles in bowling. It keeps you physically active, so you burn calories as well. Therefore, not only are you getting some physical activity, but you will be getting rid of some excess fat too. It will help keep your back, leg and arm joints supple, particularly if you are over 50.

If you take part in this sport, you will be almost assured to keep your physique in top condition. Depending on how much weight you need to lose and how frequently you play bowls, you may be able to give up your other weight control exercises.

That would suit most dieters as it is the exercising that bothers most people. It would also save you money as you will not have to pay to use a fitness center and buy work out clothes and track suits. The best thing to do would probably be to join a neighborhood team. These teams usually have local competitions, so you might be required to play twice a week.

The weight control advantages of bowling fall into the following categories.

Light muscle toning is achieved by normal bowling activities like walking, bending and swinging your arm in order to loose the ball. This is just like when you exercise by walking, which is one of the best physical exercises. Bending and swinging your arm to bowl is also good for your joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Moreover, it also promotes good blood circulation. So, overall, bowling is a fun way of exercising and losing weight in the process.

Mild fat burning will be achieved by the actions of walking, flexing, stretching, and swinging. If you play often you will be losing weight on a regular basis too. It can be extended by walking to and from the venue of parking your car half a mile away from the club. Walk up and down any stairs involved, do not take the lift

Melancholy can be avoided by mixing with your friends and fellow team members. Many dieters do become depressed when dieting. This can be for numerous reasons. Your weight loss might be slower than you hoped for or it could be chemical. A sudden drop in calories could leave you feeling down.

Bowling can assist here by helping you build friendships. You get to create good social relationships, which are known to promote better heart performance and good heart performance is a good match with weight loss or control.

So, you see, bowling is not just a great, fun game, it also helps build strength and helps you expend energy, which means calories, and gives you some exercise that you would not otherwise have had.

Busting The Rapid Weight Loss Myths

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

There is nothing inherently wrong with wanting to be slimmer just to have a sexier body. Many people have moulded their bodies to make them look more healthy and more attractive. However, there is no way to attain this new look in a day of two. The problem is that most people do not want to wait, they want it now.

This can lead to these people making rather rash and, it has top be said, rather silly decisions. They are not willing to wait and they are not willing to work for what they want. This is why so many people turn to rapid weight loss diets. Some ‘guru’ brings out a new fad diet and a good proportion of the ‘I want it now’ crowd jump on the band wagon. Only to be disappointed again within the year or less.

Speed diets or rapid weight loss diets tend to put out great advertising copy that is very hard to resist. However, all diets, no matter which one you choose, Weight Watchers, Atkins or fad diet, depend on overweight people making lifestyle changes in order for them to work permanently.

There is a very apposite saying: if you always do what you always did, then you will always get what you always got. That says it all. You can lose weight with all but the stupidest of diets, but if you go back to your old ways when you hit your target weight, you MUST slowly, but gradually creep back to your old weight.

If you give your body more calories than it needs, it will store them for when it does need them. The problem is that that day never comes for too many people, because they never exert themselves. This is especially true of fad diets like the ‘cabbage water’ diet. Yes, you will lose weight on it, but you would lose weight by fasting whatever you did. For a while, and then you might get sick. For a diet to work, it has to be flexible and enjoyable enough for you to be able to stick with it for the rest of your life. Make no mistake, dieting is long-haul.

Many rapid weight loss programs actually only squeeze the water out of you. Just like a wet sponge. But a good dieter maintains his or her grip on that sponge, not letting it soak up water again. The problem with short term dieting, is that you let go of the sponge underwater.

This is why serial dieters first lose weight and are happy; then finish dieting, go back to their old weight and become depressed. In that state of depression they are suckers for the advertisers of the next latest craze diet. In other words, they are being manipulated and literally squeezed dry, but of their money too.

These silly rapid weight loss programs also include fat loss pills. They are not making you lose fat, well, maybe a tiny amount gets flushed out with all the surplus water you are carrying. They are only diuretics under another name. How many pills would I sell if I called them diuretics? How many more would I sell if I called them miracle fat loss pills?

Type the word diuretic into a engine and find out more about them. They are all around you in mild healthy forms. A diuretic will essentially cause your body to lose more fluid than was in the diuretic. Tea is a diuretic, for example.

This list of these dopey dieting aids to rapid weight loss goes on and on, but someone must be buying them and you can bet your bottom dollar that it is the sad, depressed dieter who let go of the sponge.

Slimming soap! Slimming soap is being advertised as being a rare Eastern remedy for obesity. Well, let me tell you, I live in the East and I have never seen it here. Asians are slim because they do a lot of physical labour and do not come under the pressure to eat junk food that Westerners do, although that situation is changing rapidly too.

Magnetic weight loss earrings, I ask you! Even being drunk without a present for your wife ten minutes before Christmas Day is not a good enough excuse to fall for this one, surely? The advertisers say that the secret of this set of earrings is that they are magnetic.

Well, if you believe this, why not get a pair of $1 children’s toy magnets or even a pair of fridge magnets and put one in each hip pocket? Two? Well, after all, you would not want to lose weight from only one side, would you? You would be lop sided.

Just remember, when you are looking for a rapid weight loss diet: there ain’t one ( that will work for life). If you are putting on weight, then your lifestyle is wrong and it is up to you alone to change it.
